Jackie sat on her bed and gazed silently into space. There was fear now, fear that she would never see all her friends again. Fear that she would never have a chance to banter with them again, fear that her ‘sister’ would lose someone to have a heart-to-heart chat with, whenever she felt like it. But, most of all, fear that after this day was gone, she would never again have another day to spend with her beloved. She would do anything to gain more time, just to do even the most mundane task with her beloved. Suddenly, the door crashed open, in Annie’s typical attention grabbing entrance. “Hey, Jackie!” “Well, I’m not his only patient, you know?” Jackie grinned. “And, you call yourself my ‘sister’. Where are my flowers?” “I will go with you for a brief visit before I go home.” Henry suggested, patting Paul on the back, serious for once in his life. “Come on, let’s go.” On so saying, the two of them continued down the hallway, towards Jackie’s room. Upon reaching it, Paul reached out to open the door, only to be surprised by the sight before him. There, Annie was sleeping peacefully on a chair beside Jackie’s bed, both of their hands entwined. Henry, on the other hand, was, to his extreme discomfort, rather touched by the scene before him. He had never realised just how vulnerable Annie was. He had always thought that Annie was too strong to require a guy by her side, but he might be wrong. If that was the case, then perhaps, it was not too late for him to court Annie. “So, what do you say? Should we go in or just leave?” “It’s up to you. You are Jackie’s boyfriend, not me.” “I think we should just go, I can come back tomorrow morning.” “Fine, but what about Annie. Do you wanna leave her here? I think she will get a backache from sleeping in that chair all night.” “You want to send her home?” “I don’t know.” Suddenly confused, Henry was at a loss as to what to do. Finally, he entered the room, lifted Annie into his arms gently, and carried her to the couch at a corner of the room. He then proceeded to cover her with a blanket. Amazingly enough, Annie slept through it all. “Alright, let’s go. And, not a word of this to anyone, or else.... Never mind, no matter what you say, I’m just going to deny it all.” Paul laughed, one of his rare ones on that fateful day. “So, you do have a soft spot for that lady, and here, I thought that perhaps, you are really cold blooded.” “Shut up!” Henry retorted as he ushered Paul out of the room, closing the door gently after them. “Do you still wanna go home?” “Of course I do.” Paul replied, before hurrying down the hallway after his best friend, cum apartment mate. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

Paul’s Room

11.42pm

Paul leaned back against his armchair, staring into space. He could not get to sleep, realising that it was a bad idea for him to return that day. He should have remained at the hospital at Jackie’s side, where he could keep an eye on her. Yet, he was reluctant to disturb the peace that Annie seemed to find by staying with Jackie. He guessed he would just have to settle for staying by her side throughout the next night. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a movement at the doorway.

“Come on in, why are the both of you being so secretive?”

Sheepishly, Henry and Gilbert entered the room.

“We thought you might need some company.”

Gilbert said as he made himself comfortable on Paul’s bed.

“Well, I don’t mind some company.....”

“Do I sense a ‘but’ there?”

Henry cut in.

“Of course not. I was just thinking that I would rather be with Jackie right now, you know. No offense to you guys.”

Paul quickly added.

“I’m offended.” Henry joked. “So, you are the type to care more for partners than friends.”

“No... that’s not what I mean...”

“Oh come on, Henry, let the poor guy off. He has suffered enough already.”

As soon as the words came out of his mouth, Gilbert regretted it. To ease the sudden air of sadness in the room, Henry asked Gilbert about Annie.

“I don’t know, I have never seen Annie like that before. But then again, nothing major has ever happened in our family before.”

“Well, I think it just shows the more human side of your sister, when she’s always this cool lady. I think I like this more feminine side of her.”

“Say, Henry, don’t tell me you are falling for my sister again?”

“So what if I am? I do have a soft spot for her, you know.”

“Henry, you’d better decide if you are really serious about her this time. It’s really not fair for her to get hurt by you twice.”

Paul joined in the conversation.

“Hey, what’s this? When did you two become Annie’s protectors? Don’t worry, this time, I’m serious.”

“Let’s see if Annie will accept you again.”

Gilbert couldn’t resist jibing at Henry.

“I have my own ways.” Henry retorted. “Don’t you know that no woman can resist me?”

“Urrgghh...”

Both Paul and Gilbert pretended to puke.

“I can’t be bothered to talk to you guys. Goodnight!”

Henry got off the bed, and returned to his room.

“I’m going too.” Gilbert patted Paul on the shoulder. “Don’t think too much. Tomorrow will be a better day.”

Paul smiled.

“Thank you, Gil. Goodnight.

Paul's apartment The Next Day 8.36am <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

“Hey, Paul, where are you going off so early to?”
Gilbert asked as he turned around in his seat at the table.
“I’m going to visit Jackie before my shift starts.”
“Oh, ok. I will be by to see her later.”
“Sure, I will tell her that. See you later then.”
“Don’t you want some breakfast?”
“No, I’m not hungry.”
aul answered before going out of the house, leaving Gilbert to stare at empty air for a moment before he turned to look at Henry opposite him.
“Do you think he’s fine? Can you remember when was the last time he ate anyway? And, why is he talking as if Jackie’s awake?”
He added as an after thought.
“I think Paul’s accepting this better than any of us expected, and as for the way he’s talking, I think he’s trying to make things as normal as possible. Anyway, what makes you so sure that Jackie won’t understand what we say to her?”
aul entered the room quietly, surprised to find Annie still there. He would have expected her to be gone by the time he got there. He walked to her side and tapped her gently on the shoulder, not wanting to alarm her.
“Oh, Paul, it’s you. For a while there, I thought it was Jackie, waking me up.” Annie sat up on the couch and rubbed her eyes, before realizing her position. “How did I end up here?”
“Henry carried you here last night.”
aul nodded before sitting down beside Annie on the couch.
“Both Henry and I stopped by last night and saw you sleeping beside Jackie. Henry carried you over here so that you would be more comfortable. He was also the one who covered you with a blanket. By the way, don’t let him know that I told you about this, he didn’t want you to know about it.”
“Why wouldn’t he want me to know about it?”
“I don’t know, but I do know that he still cares very much for you.”
Annie turned her head away, uncomfortable with the direction that this conversation was going. Suddenly, she felt Paul’s hand covered one of hers.
“Annie, are you alright? We thought you had gone home after visiting Jackie yesterday, why did you come back? I know you are as upset as I am about Jackie, but you have to take care of yourself too, Jackie needs you to be strong for her.”
“I know. It just takes some getting used to, I guess. I didn’t want to stay at the apartment alone.”
“Do you want to come stay with us these few days?”
“No, I’m fine. I promise. I guess I’d better go. I still need to go to work.”
On a sudden impulse, Annie leaned over and gave Paul a hug before heading for Jackie’s bed.
“Hey, Jackie, I have to go now. I will come and see you again later this evening. Bye Paul!”
Annie said and left the room, leaving a concerned Paul staring after her. Shaking his head, he went over to Jackie’s bed, and leaned down to place a kiss on her forehead.
“Hey beautiful, I’m back again. I didn’t spend the night here because I know that Annie needed the night here with you. I will try to spend every night here with you from now on till you wake up, alright?”
He went over to the windows to draw back the curtains before returning to the bed. Taking a seat by the bed, he took Jackie’s hand.
“It looks like a good day today, so, I don’t think your rainbow will appear just yet. You know what? I have a feeling that the day a rainbow appears just outside this window will be the day that you wake up. Do you remember when you told me that you hope to see a rainbow one of these days? Somehow, I just know that your wish will be fulfilled very soon.”
Paul continued chatting to Jackie till it was time for his shift to start.
“I have to go to work now, but I will be back again after work.” Paul smiled and kissed Jackie gently on the lips. “See you later.”
That Night 7.05pm
Paul, Henry, Joe and Gilbert entered Jackie’s room, surprised to find Annie already there.
“Hey, Annie, what are you doing here?”
“In case you have not noticed, Jackie is my very best friend, so why should it surprise you that I am here?” Annie retorted immediately. “Anyway, don’t you guys have to work?”
“We are after shift now, and we are thinking of going to After Five, do you want to come with us?”
“Uhh, no, I don’t think so. I’m rather tired today, and I need to go to court tomorrow, so, I think I will pass. Well, I’d better go now, I’ve been here for quite a while anyway. Bye!”
Annie muttered, avoiding their eyes as she bade farewell to Jackie before fleeing the room. All four pairs of eyes stared at the door for a moment before settling on one another.
“Hey, Gilbert, what’s wrong with your sis?”
“I don’t know. Maybe you should ask Henry.”
Two pairs of eyes turned in Henry’s direction while, ignoring their bickering, Paul just walked to Jackie’s side.
“Why me? I’m not even her brother. Don’t you think you are looking at the wrong guy?”
Henry muttered, not liking the way the other two guys were looking at him.
Gilbert crossed his arms.
“We think it’s because of you that Annie is fleeing. Perhaps she doesn’t want to see you?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Henry shrugged off their thoughts and continued to Jackie’s bedside. “Jackie, I think you’d better wake up soon and find out what’s wrong with your best friend. She is acting a bit weird these days.”
“Cute way of trying to wake Jackie up. Don’t you think maybe it’s partly to do with you?”
“Why me again? Hey, are you guys ganging up on me or what? Anyway, I’m not going there with you.”
The guys continued their bantering and it was an hour later before Gilbert and Joe announced that they are leaving.
“So, who’s coming to After Five with us?”
“Umm... Paul...” Joe spoke but was quickly hushed by Henry and Gilbert. “Ok then, guess we’d better go now before it’s too late. Henry?”
“You guys go ahead first, I will catch up with you later.”
“Fine, see you later then!”
Joe answered as he and Gilbert went off.
“Hey Henry, I never thought I would ever see you miss a chance to go to After Five.”
“There are still some things that you don’t know about me.”
Henry said smugly, before going to sit on the couch. Although he never revealed the true reason for not going with the two guys to After Five, secretly, he was hoping that Annie would return to the hospital later in the night. After another hour had passed and he was ready to give up, there came a soft knock at the door. Both guys looked up in surprise as Annie entered the room again, this time, dressed more casually.
“Uhh.. Hi! I didn’t know you guys were still here. I thought you said you are going to After Five?”
“Only Gil and Joe went. What are you doing back here? Thought you said you are tired?”
“I was but not anymore, so I thought I would come back here and keep Jackie company.”
Annie replied, going towards Jackie’s bed. At this point of the conversation, Henry decided to intervene. He walked towards Annie, and whispered.
“Annie, I think Paul wants to spend the night here with Jackie, he couldn’t sleep the whole of last night, maybe we should just leave him alone with Jackie for the moment.”
Annie looked at him in surprise, as if just noticing him in the room. Then, she turned towards Paul, temping down the growing feeling of disappointment and sadness.
“Hey, Paul, I think I’d better go. You need to spend time with Jackie too. I will come back tomorrow to see her.”
“Really, I’m serious. See you tomorrow!”
With a forced smile, Annie turned to leave the room.
“I’m sending her home. I will come again tomorrow.”
Henry told Paul before he hurried out of the room after Annie, finally leaving Paul alone with Jackie.
Paul gave a sigh before turning his attention back to Jackie.
“Hey, Jackie, I’m kinda worried about Annie, you know, I’ve never seen her so uncertain before, she’s like... lost. I know she needs you a lot as well, you’d better wake up soon, I’m not sure how long this can continue.”
Paul gently kissed Jackie’s hand before continuing.
“Have I told you yet how much I love you? I love you, Jackie, and I need you. I never realize how important you are to me, until it’s too late. No, sorry, it’s not too late yet. I know you will wake up. I need you in my life, Jackie, to cheer me up whenever I’m down, to give me support whenever I need it... “
Paul talked to Jackie till late in the night, before exhaustion finally overtook him, and he laid his head down on the bed beside Jackie, falling into a deep sleep.
After leaving Jackie’s room, Henry managed to catch up to Annie, and offered to drive her home, only to be rejected.
“I can go home by myself.”
“I still think it's best if I drive you home.”
Henry insisted, and pulled a reluctant Annie along with him to his car. Ignoring the animosity that was apparent in the car, he drove Annie home. Upon reaching her apartment, he invited himself up for a cup of coffee, leaving a helpless Annie exasperated but following along.
As soon as they entered the apartment, Henry pulled Annie to the couch with him.
“I thought you wanted a cup of coffee? Let me make you one and then you can be on your way.”
Annie stood up, preparing to walk away, only to be pulled back by Henry.
“Will you just let me say a few words?”
After a moment’s hesitation, Annie relented.
A look of relief flashed briefly across Henry’s face before he let go of Annie’s hand to take out a lighter from his pocket.
“I bought this specially for you. Will you let me be your only lighter from this moment on?”
“I gave up smoking a few days ago.”
Annie’s answer stunned Henry for a moment before he regained his composure.
“Well then, I guess it’s this lighter’s tough luck that it didn’t have the chance to be of service to a beautiful girl.” Henry threw the lighter on the table infront of them. “But, the lighter’s owner would never give up. Annie, you know what I’m asking of you.”
“What? What do you want?”
“I know I have hurt you many times in the past, and I can’t promise you that I won’t do so again in future, but I can promise you that I’m going to change. No one can foretell the future, but as long as we are happy together, who cares what will happen. As long as we love each other, nothing can deter us. Annie, I love you, can you give me another chance, and let us start all over again?”
Tears welled in Annie’s eyes. Sensing a victory, Henry took the chance and pulled Annie into his arms. After a moment of struggle, Annie went into his arms willingly, and hugged him tight.
“You promise to change?”
“Yes, I do. I will try my best not to hurt you ever again.”
Satisfied with that, Annie simply laid her head down on Henry’s shoulder, closing her eyes in bliss. 作者: 395943558 时间: 2005-2-13 12:27 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

Jackie’s Hospital Room
A Few Days Later
8.34pm <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
Annie took hold of Jackie’s hand, a ritual she had done for so many times that it had become more of a habit than a conscious action on her part now.
“Jackie, it’s Annie, can you hear me? I know you can, so why don’t you try to response?”
Tears threatened to fall from Annie’s eyes. Even after so many days, Annie still found it hard to accept the fact that her best friend was in a coma, and might never wake up. After a moment, she collected herself.
“I actually have good news for you today. Jackie, do you believe that a leopard can change it's spots? Well, guess what? Henry and I are back together again. He has really changed for the better, you know. He’s more attentive to me now, more sensitive too, and from what I know, he has not look at another girl from the moment he asked me to be his girlfriend again.”
Annie laughed.
“Find it hard to believe, huh? I find it hard to believe myself. I know what you would tell me if you were awake, you would tell me to appreciate him and everything around me, and not to worry about anything else. Sometimes, I wonder how you can say that to others but not act on it yourself. You are always the worrywart, worrying about how others would be affected if you do something.”
She clenched Jackie’s hand tighter.
“I’m surprised that you have not woken up by now, seeing as how you are always worrying about others. Don’t you worry that everyone is very concerned about you, especially Paul? It has only been a few days, but he has already lost weight. I’m sure you don’t want him to suffer, do you? For his sake, you have to try harder! Oh well, today’s Saturday, so I’m going to spend the night here with you again, and we can talk to our heart’s contents till day break.”
Jackie’s Hospital Room
5 Months Later
3.16pm
“Jackie, I’m here again. I know you can hear me. You don’t seem to be trying hard enough. You have to try harder to wake up. You have to try harder for Paul’s sake, no one’s suffering more than he is. If only you could see him now, so run down. He has not taken a day’s break since you went into a coma, do you know that? He says that he has to work everyday so that he can be closer to you, and that he can be told at once if there are any changes in you. You may not be able to see it, but there were a few times when I know Paul tried very hard not to break down. Sometimes, I think he would feel better if he would only just let go. ”
Annie’s tone changed from persuading to threatening.
“If you don’t wake up soon, Paul is going to be snatched away by somebody else. No girls can resist him for long, you know.”
Annie sighed, knowing that this might not work either. She had tried all forms of tactics for five months already, but nothing had ever worked.
“On another note, there are a few new doctors in the hospital. Surprisingly, I have never managed to meet any of them, though Henry had told me about them. They are here to kind of take over your job, when A & E got shorthanded.”
Jackie’s Hospital Room
10 Months Later
9.48pm
“Hey Jackie, how do you feel today? Guess what?” Annie grabbed Jackie’s hand excitedly. “Henry proposed to me today, but I turned him down, and before you say anything, he understands why.”
Annie leaned her chin on their joined hands.
“I told him that I would not marry him until you wake up. And, before you start scolding me, have you forgotten about our agreement about being each other’s maid of honor? How could I even think of marrying when my best friend is not with me? I hope this is incentive enough for you to wake up.”
Annie turned solemn.
“When will you ever wake up? Paul is holding up surprisingly well, though he is still looking rather run down. And, I know that he still reads ‘Le Petit Prince’ to you from time to time.” She grinned.
“I know, I know, you hate it when I say that in French because no matter how I teach you, you can never get the sound of it right. Jackie, everyone misses you so much, even your nosiness and incessant chattering, what we would give to hear that again. The apartment seems so empty without you, though there is Henry there now to keep me company occasionally, it is still not the same. I miss you so much!”

In a rare moment, Paul, Henry, Gilbert, Joe, Helen, Carmen and a few other doctors, including a couple of new ones, were having lunch together. Tracy sat next to Paul at the table, trying to find a chance to get closer to the handsome doctor. She had hoped that she had finally made some leeway in her pursuit, since he had been really kind towards her lately.
"aul?" Henry called.
"Yep?" Paul replied.
"You wanna go to After Five with me and Annie tonight?"
"No, I don't think so."
"Oh come on, you haven't been there for a while. I think you are getting too boring."
Paul laughed.
"Oh well..."
"Hey!"
In a simultaneous action, everyone at the table turned around to look at the owner of that exuberant cry. Henry smiled upon hearing that voice, while those who knew the owner simply smiled.
"Hey yourself, beautiful."
Henry replied before pulling Annie, who had reached them by now, down for a kiss.
"Oh cut it out, you two!"
Gilbert joked, pretending to throw a napkin at the couple.
That brought a round of laughter to the table, before everyone shifted to make way for Annie beside Henry.
"So, how come you are all having lunch together today?"
Annie enquired.
"Nothing special, we all just happened to be having the same free time today, of which I am regretting."
Henry answered, with a pointed look at Gilbert, who just stared back at him unabashedly.
Paul noticed that there were droplets of water on Annie’s hair and clothes.
"Why are you all wet? Is it raining? The sun seems to be rather bright to me."
"It didn't exactly pour, if that's what you mean. There was just a light shower on my way here. Oh yeah, I saw a really beautiful rainbow too. I think you can still catch it if you look out of the window now."
Hearing the word 'rainbow', an air of sadness seemed to descend over Paul, although he tried to mask it. Not knowing what brought on that sadness, but determined to get rid of it, Tracy decided to broach a new subject.
"So, you are Henry’s girlfriend?"
Annie looked at her in amusement.
"So, I see that my reputation has preceded me. Yep, I have the unfortunate honor of being Henry’s girlfriend. And, you are?"
Henry nudged Annie.
"What unfortunate? I should say really fortunate! Oh, I forgot that I have not introduced you guys yet, but I think I have told you about them. Tracy has been working here for a while already, that I forgot you have not met her before, and a few of the others too, I believe."
He indicated with a nod of his head.
"This is Tracy, also working in the A & E. She is actually kind of taking over Jackie, since we got a bit shorthanded. And, that is Anson, who....."
The rest of the words were lost to Paul as he gazed out of the window, visualizing how the scene would be like if Jackie were there. He knew that the whole place would definitely become noisier and livelier. Jackie had a way about her of lighting up a place wherever she went. He turned his attentions back to the conversation at the table just as Henry finished with the introductions.
"Hey, Annie, is there a great sale today?"
Tracy nodded at the huge bag that Annie had brought along with her, from which a huge present could be seen peeking out.
"Oh," Annie hesitated, stealing a look at Paul before continuing. "Today is Jackie's birthday. I got that for her."
This time, the mention of Jackie’s name brought a palpable sense of gloom to the table, as everyone who knew her looked down solemnly.
"Why didn’t anyone remind me of her birthday? Now, she's going to kill me for not buying her a gift."
Gilbert complained, trying to lighten the mood.
"aul..."
Annie covered his hand with hers.
"Yes?" Paul smiled. "Don't worry, Annie, I'm fine. Time flies, doesn't it? It's been more than a year already. I nearly forgot about her birthday myself. And Gilbert, at least you won't be as badly injured as I will be if I had forgotten about her birthday." He added.
That finally eased the tension as everyone grinned. Tracy and Anson looked on at the scene before them. They were really curious about this Jackie, who had the power to change the mood of everyone, even though she was not present. They had learnt about her from their colleagues, and knew that she was well liked by all.
At the same time, they were rather envious too of the bond of friendship that they had witnessed before them, and which obviously helped them through the difficult period. Secretly though, both longed to be a part of that circle of friends, to be able to banter with them with ease, to be able to share everything so openly. Tracy, for her part, hoped too that she could be the one to replace Jackie in Paul's heart; she had also heard that the couple was dating when Jackie underwent the operation.
The doctors resumed eating as they realized that they had lingered too long already. Nonchalantly, Annie took a sip of Henry's drink.
"Hey, that's mine."
"Oh, don't be a baby. I just took a sip."
Paul shook his head as he resumed eating. He remembered a comment he had once made about the two of them; about how destructive it would be if they were at loggerheads, since when they were together, they were already arguing non-stop.
"aul."
Tracy trailed the straw round in her glass of drink.
"Yes?"
"I... I was wondering if you are free this Saturday night?"
"I guess so, why?"
"Would you like to catch a movie with me?"
"I..."
Before Paul could answer any further, he was interrupted by the sudden appearance of a nurse by his side.
"Dr Ching."
He looked up.
"Yes?"
"Dr Yong sent me to find you. He said that Dr Tong is finally responding."
That startled Paul so much that he dropped the spoon he had been holding, unaware of the rice splashing everywhere.
“What?”
“Dr Yong was doing his round, and he was in Dr Tong’s room when he asked me to come and find you. He said that...”
Before the nurse had even finished the sentence, Paul was out of his seat and rushing out of the cafeteria, followed closely by Annie, Henry and Gilbert.
“Hey, wait for me!”
Joe yelled, as he waited for the others to catch up before running to Jackie’s room too. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-2-14 10:19 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Jackie’s Hospital Room
The door to Jackie’s room slammed open, startling the doctor who was busy studying Jackie’s chart. He looked up to see a breathless Paul entering the room. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Oh hi, Paul. I can see that you didn’t waste any time getting here.”
“David,” Paul acknowledged his colleague. “Did Jackie really respond?”
“Well, her vitals appear to be the same now, though I did detect a little something more earlier on. Here, talk to her, maybe that will help.”
By now, everyone had entered the room, while Annie, Henry, Gilbert, Helen, Joe and Carmen crowded round the bed.
Paul sat beside Jackie’s bed, and took her hand gently.
“Jackie, it’s Paul. Can you hear me? If you can, let me know, just do something to let me know that you can hear me. Jackie, come on, open your eyes,”
He kissed Jackie’s hand, before trying again.
“Happy birthday, Jackie. Do you know that today is your birthday? We are planning a birthday party for you. Annie is also here. She has brought you a huge present! Actually, everyone is here, Henry, Gilbert, Helen, Joe... We are all just waiting to see you wake up, to see that playful smile of yours again. Come on, Jackie, I’m sure you don’t want to disappoint us, right? Today is such a nice day too. Annie told me that she saw a rainbow on her way here, and that it is still here. If you wake up now, you can still see it. It’s just outside your window.”
Paul echoed the words which he had uttered such a long time ago. On so saying, he got up, and went to draw back the drapes, so that Jackie would be able to see the rainbow, which to his relief, was still there, when she woke up.
He returned to her bedside, and resumed his appeal.
“Jackie, do you know long we have waited for this miracle? Do you know how long you have been sleeping? Come on, sleeping beauty, it’s time for you to wake up.”
Paul had to choke out his last words, as disappointment overwhelmed him. It had been fifteen minutes since he first entered the room. Even though he tried to remain optimistic, he was not so sure that what David had seen was just his imagination.
Annie could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. She had been so sure that her best friend would open her eyes any moment now, yet, after seeing Paul talking to her for so long, there was not even a response. Henry placed his arm around her, tucking her to his side. On seeing how devastated Paul was becoming, Annie decided to try. She walked to his side.
“Here, Paul, let me try.”
Paul looked up, and seemed to only then acknowledge the presence of others in the room.
“Yeah, Paul, let Annie try.”
Gilbert encouraged.
Paul finally nodded, and allowed Annie to replace him on the chair.
Annie picked up Jackie’s hand, rubbing it absent-mindedly.
“Hey, Jackie, it’s time to wake up. All of us have been waiting ages for you to just wake up. You have been sleeping for a long time already, don’t you know that? It’s time to get up and face the world again. There’s Paul too. He has slimmed down so much in the last few months, spending every moment he can spare with you. You wouldn’t want to disappoint him, would you.”
She leaned in closer to Jackie, whispering in her ear.
“There’s this new doctor in the ER, who is replacing you. Even though I have only just met her, I can see that she is interested in Paul. You'd better wake up if you don’t want Paul to be snatched away by someone else.”
She leaned back again, resuming her normal tone, leaving everyone looking on in bemusement, as they wondered what Annie had just whispered to Jackie.
“It’s your birthday today, and I think it’s the best present you can give yourself if you wake up now. I even have your bedroom all ready, just waiting for you to come back. Jackie...”
Tears blinded Annie as she continued talking to her best friend, who was just like a sister to her.
Henry walked up to her.
“Here, Annie, don’t be like that. I’m sure Jackie wouldn’t want to see your crying face the moment she wakes up. I think Paul still has things he wants to say to her.”
Annie nodded, and got off the seat, wiping her cheeks as she did so.
Paul patted her shoulder reassuringly before he took the seat that Annie had just vacated.
“Hey Jackie, it’s me again. When you recover, we will go see the sun rise together, just the two of us...”
The movement was so slight, so slight that he did not notice, nor did anyone else who was in the room.
Then came the whisper.
"aul."
Still, he did not hear it, being too engrossed with talking to her.
She tried again.
"aul."
This time, it came out slightly louder.
And this time, he caught it, nearly coming out of his chair in his excitement.
"Jackie, did you say something?" He squeezed her hand. "If you hear me, just squeeze my hand in return." Even though it was as weak as before, this time, he felt it. "She squeezed my hand!" Paul nearly shouted.
Everyone strained forward in their excitement. Annie quickly walked to Paul side.
"Jackie, it Annie. Can you hear me?"
This time, her voice came out much stronger, so that everyone in the room could hear it.
"Yeah, yeah, I hear you. You are so noisy, how could anyone not hear you?"
Annie laughed, amidst her tears. Paul grinned.
"She is going to be fine now."
He looked fondly at Jackie, who had finally managed to open her eyes. She gazed back at the man, who had been at her side, all this while.
"aul..."
"It’s alright, you are going to be just fine."
He looked at David, who nodded.
"Her vital signs are strong."
Paul nodded his thanks on hearing that, and stood up, intending to examine Jackie himself.
"If you will excuse me guys, I need to do a checkup for Jackie."
"Yeah, yeah, excuses, excuses. If you want a moment alone with her, just say so, we will understand." Henry retorted.
"Alright, guys, I want a moment alone with Jackie, so will you please excuse us?"
Paul grinned, his whole face lightened up now, in a way that no one had seen for a long time.
"See, I knew it!"
Henry could not resist making that last remark, as he ushered everyone out of the room.
Annie lingered.
"I will see you later, ok?"
Jackie nodded.
Reluctantly, Annie left the room after the others, turning back to look at Jackie a couple of times, as if to reassure herself that her best friend had really woken up.
Jackie turned her attention to the man who had been contented to just watch the exchange, and who was now grinning crazily.
“Let me do an examination on you, first, alright? Before we talk any further”Jackie smiled, and closed her eyes, content to leave her life in this man’s hands.
“Jackie!”
Her eyes startled open by Paul’s sudden shout.
“Sorry, I... I... thought that you had gone back to your coma again.”
Weakly, Jackie stretched out a hand to take Paul’s in hers.
“Paul, now that I have woken up, I don’t plan to going back to sleep again. Don’t worry about me, I’m fine, I promise.”
He indicated to the nurse that had stayed behind to unbutton Jackie’s blouse, before leaning down to listen to her heartbeat with his stethoscope. After a few more examinations, he finally declared that she was fit and should recover pretty soon.
“May, you may go now. Tell the others that they may come in, in a couple of minutes' time.”
The nurse smiled, and took her leave. As soon as the nurse was out of sight, Paul sat down next to Jackie, and took her hand, bringing it up to his lips for a kiss.
“Do you know how worried I have been? It’s really time that you wake up, you know. I was so scared that I won’t ever have a chance to tell you how much I love you, how much I need you by my side...”
“Since when have you become so mushy?” Jackie teased, her playful nature reasserting itself, even though her voice was still weak.
“Since you went into a coma.”
Paul replied seriously. Tears came to his eyes as he gazed at the lady whom he was afraid that he would never talk to again, who would never know his love, and whom he could not live without.
On seeing the tears, Jackie was quick to wipe them off, even though her eyes were starting to mist.
“Paul, I’m sorry, sorry to make you worry, sorry that I took so long to wake up, sorry that...”
Paul placed a finger against her lips.
“Don’t apologize, it’s not your fault. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s mine. I should never have taken that extra minute, should never have...”
Before he can finish that sentence, Jackie placed her own finger against his lips.
“Let’s not talk about whose fault it is now, shall we? Now that we are given another chance, I think we should appreciate our time together more, don’t you think so?”
Paul nodded, and smiled against her finger. Slowly, he leaned down and replaced his finger on Jackie’s lips with his own lips. He had just lifted his head again when there was a knock at the door. It opened a small crack before everyone’s heads peeked in.
“So, are you guys decent?”
Paul laughed.
“Oh, you guys, come on in.”
Without any hesitation, the door was flung wide open, and everyone reentered the room. This time, the room seemed more crowded as the news of Jackie’s waking up had traveled in the hospital and everyone who had known her, wanted to come and visit her.
Paul settled himself on the bed next to Jackie, holding her hand all the while.
“Now, she has just woken up, so not too much of an excitement, ok?”
“See how defensive he is of her already!” Gilbert teased.
“Well, I nearly lost her once, I’m not going to again!” Paul retorted, gripping Jackie’s hand tightly.
“Wow, I feel like a star or something, so many of you are here to see me. I guess I should feel honored.”
“Of course you should.” Annie answered. “I even took the rest of the day off.”
Jackie turned her head, and saw that her dear friend had come forward and was now standing beside her bed. She stretched out a hand, which Annie took hold of immediately.
“Annie.” She said simply, smiling.
“You scared the hell out of me, you know! Don’t you ever do that to me again.”
Annie scolded gently, tears welling up in her eyes again, though this time, they were tears of happiness and not sadness.
Paul, on seeing this scene, stood up at once and offered his seat to Annie.
“No, it’s ok, you can remain sitting. I still have lots of time to scold her, you need this more than I do.”
“Alright, if you say so.”
Paul replied, sitting back down immediately, reluctant to relinquish his position, even though he was the one who had made the offer in the first place. After a round of bantering that lasted about half an hour, Paul declared that it was time everyone leave, and allow the patient to rest.
“You just want her all to yourself.” Joe complained good-naturedly.
“Come on, Annie. Let’s go. Let Paul have his time with Jackie. Look at him, he has not been so relieved and happy for a long while!”
Henry said, and placed an arm around her waist, preparing to guide her from the room. That action did not escape Jackie, causing her to raise an eyebrow enquiringly as Annie walked towards her.
“Ok.” Annie leaned over and kissed Jackie on the forehead. “I will come and see you again tomorrow.” She also did not miss the lifted eyebrow. “I will tell you everything when I come again, alright? Now, rest, and enjoy your time with Paul.”
She teased, her cool facade firmly in place again.
“Oh, Annie, long time no see, and you are still like that.”
That caused everyone to laugh.
“Bye! Rest and get well soon!”
The gang called as they filed out of the room, finally leaving the room in peace again, with only Paul in the room with Jackie.
“Don’t you have to work, Paul?”
“Oh yeah, I forgot.”
“Go on then, don’t bother about me, I feel fine. I will still be here after your shift, now go!”
“If you are sure...”
“Yep, very. Now go.”
Jackie laughed and made a shooing motion with her hand weakly. Obliging, Paul leaned over and gave her another kiss before leaving the room himself. All was going to be fine now. 作者: myownapple 时间: 2005-2-15 09:57 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

Jackie’s Hospital Room
A Week Later
1.55pm <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Oh wow, all the important doctors of the hospital are in my room today. Don’t you have to work or did the hospital declare it a day of holiday?”
Jackie asked, her words reminiscent of those that Paul had uttered that fateful day fourteen months ago. Today, at last, she was able to sit up and lean back against the headboard.
“If she can say that, it is proof that she’s fine now.”
Henry could not resist being the first to start the bantering.
“Hmm... How can you say that? You should at least show some concern for me, you know. What kind of a friend are you anyway?”
Jackie replied indignantly, looking towards Paul, who was sitting beside her, and laughing at the same time. The latter had stayed with her throughout the entire night, unwilling to let her out of his sight. He smiled and placed his arm around her, while she leaned against him contentedly.
Gilbert nudged Henry.
“Oh, look at the two lovebirds! They look so cozy.”
“Why, are you jealous?” Paul grinned.
“Do I have a reason to be?”
Gilbert retorted at once. A knock at the door at that moment attracted everyone’s attention, as they turned as one to look at the door. It opened to admit Joe, Helen, Carmen, Peter, Judy and a couple of new doctors that Jackie had never seen before.
“So, how are you feeling today, Jackie?”
Helen asked.
“Much better. Now, I just want to get out of this bed and return home. I’m already so sick of staying here."
Helen laughed.
“Be patient. I’m sure you will be out of it in no time at all. Anyway, you have Paul here to keep you company, so I’m sure you won’t feel bored.”
“Unless Paul is the one boring you.” Henry cut in.
“Hey, hey...”
Paul shook his fist threateningly at Henry, causing everyone in the room to laugh. The laughter was just dying down when Jackie turned her attention to the newcomers in the room.
“And, who would these be? I didn’t know that I have become so famous already.”
Paul laughed, and squeezed Jackie’s shoulders, indicating with his head.
“This is Tracy, and that is Anson. They have been working here for a few months already, kind of taking over you when A & E got shorthanded.”
Jackie smiled, and turned her attention to the two doctors.
“Hi!”
They smiled back, but it was Tracy who replied.
“Hi! We heard a lot about you.”
“Oh, nothing bad, I hope.”
“Bad, it’s all bad.” Henry drawled.
“And, I’d bet it’s you who said all the bad things, right?” Jackie shot back.
“Ahh... our Jackie is back in action.” Joe added.
“Oh, cut it out, you guys, I’m still too weak to banter with you.”
“Are you sure?” Henry asked. “You don’t look sick at all to me. I wonder if you were only trying to scare us the last fourteen months.”
“Paul, chase them all out of here, please.” Jackie sighed in exasperation, as she pressed her head into his shoulder.
“Guys, guys, behave yourself. We have guests here.” Paul said.
“Who, oh, you mean Tracy and Anson.” Henry turned and looked in bemusement at Tracy and Anson, who appeared dazed by all the bantering that was going on. Anson got her voice back first.
“What, what? Oh no, no, continue. It’s really interesting to see how you all interact. You must be really good friends, huh?”
“Oh yes, the best.” Joe replied. “Most of the time.”
That caused another round of laughter. All of a sudden, Jackie, who had been lounging comfortably against Paul, raised her head.
“Where’s Annie?”
“She said she will be by later.” Henry replied.
“Ok.” Jackie returned her head to its previous position.
All of a sudden, there was a knock at the door before it burst open in Annie’s usual fashion, and she entered, catching the attention of all the occupants of the room.
“Hey!”
“Ahh... speak of the devil.” Joe grinned.
Jackie managed to push herself upright when she saw her best friend entering the room, while Paul stood up as well, knowing instinctively that these two friends needed to be alone for a moment.
The first thing that Annie saw upon entering the room was Jackie sitting up on bed. She dropped her bags, rushed to the bed, and gave her friend a huge hug. Jackie hugged her back with all the strength in her. Tears coursed down both of their faces.
“You are finally up! I missed you so much, Jackie.”
“I missed you too, Annie.”
After a long while, they straightened up again, each wiping the tears off the other’s cheeks, all the while smiling. Finally, Annie went to sit by Jackie’s side, taking the position that Paul had so recently vacated.
“Hey, have you forgotten about me?” Henry asked, pretending to be offended.
“Of course not.” Annie grinned, before getting off the bed to give him a kiss on the cheek, and returning to her previous position by Jackie’s side, their arms around each other.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d be very jealous, you know.”
Henry walked to the bed beside Paul, who was looking at the ladies, especially Jackie, fondly.
“Don’t worry, you don’t have a reason to be jealous.” Annie assured him. “Oh, sorry, Paul, did I take your seat?”
“No, no, it’s ok.”
“Hey, Annie, did I miss out something? Do you have something to tell me?” 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-2-17 06:25 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Even though for the past week, Annie had come to visit Jackie daily, she was never allowed to stay long enough to spend time really catching up with her best friend, hence, leaving Jackie still wondering about Annie’s relationship with Henry. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

“Tell you what?”
“You know...”
Jackie drawled, with a pointed look at Henry.
“Oh that, I thought I have told you everything already.”
“When?”
“When I came to visit you.”
“Annie...”
Jackie gritted her teeth.
“Oh, you mean you never heard what I told you?” Annie teased. “Alright, alright.” She dodged the fist that Jackie waved at her. “Henry and I are dating, have been dating for quite a few months now.”
“13 months and 22 days.”
Henry added.
Jackie laughed.
“I see that someone has changed. He has become so lovesick.”
“Who?”
Henry pretended to look around. It was then that he noticed the bags that Annie had thrown to the floor in her rush to get to Jackie. With a subtle nod at Helen, he walked to the bags and picked them up while the latter left the room quietly. A few minutes later, he whispered something to Paul, who muttered an excuse and quickly left the room.
“Why’s everyone suddenly behaving so weirdly?”
Jackie wondered.
“Is it? I thought it’s their usual behavior.”
Annie replied, laughingly.
“Oh you are terrible, Annie.”
It was while they were still chatting that the door opened without warning, this time, to admit Paul, who carried a birthday cake in his hands, singing the birthday song, with Helen trailing him, At the sight, everyone in the room got up and joined in the singing, including Annie. Slowly, Paul walked to Jackie’s side, and held the cake down to her level as the song came to an end.
“Happy birthday, Jackie. Here, make a wish and blow the candles out.”
“Yep, make a wish.” Peter interrupted. “Better late than never, right?”
The gang, who knew Peter’s usual style of putting the horse’s foot in the mouth, simply sighed in exasperation, while Judy nudged him hard, before turning their attention back to Jackie.
Jackie looked around the room, before gazing back at the man beside her, with her love shining in her eyes.
“I don’t need any wishes. They have all come true for me already.”
She answered, though, obligingly, she closed her eyes, and made a wish before blowing the candles out.
It was while Paul was busy cutting the cake that Tracy and Anson announced that they had to leave. For the whole time that they were in the room, they had felt rather uncomfortable, like they did not belong there. They knew that these people's friendship go back a long way, and they simply felt like intruders among them.
“Don’t you want to stay for a piece of cake?”
Paul looked up in surprise.
“Yeah, have some cake before you leave.”
Jackie offered.
“No, it’s ok, we gotta get back to work anyway. Happy birthday, Jackie. Sorry we didn’t buy you anything, but we didn’t know it is your birthday.”
“That’s ok. Thanks for coming to visit me.”
“You are welcome.”
On so saying, the two of them left the room, while everyone simply resumed what they had been doing before they were interrupted. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-2-17 06:31 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Outside in the corridor

“So, what do you think?”

“Huh?”

Tracy looked at Anson, who had asked the question.

“Do you think we will ever be a part of that group?”

“I don’t know. Do you want to be a part of that group?”

“I think I do. I am rather envious of their close relationship, you know. I have never had friends that are so close, being able to say anything, and argue without fighting. Did you also see the deep bond of friendship between Annie and Jackie? Seems they are more like sisters than friends.”

“I know. They are a rather close-knit group, aren’t they? I felt like an intruder the whole time I was in there, I didn’t even know what to say, I was at a total loss for words. They were going too fast for me to catch up.”

Anson laughed.

“I know, I had the same problem too. Actually, they are a rather fun bunch, bantering the whole time without stopping. On another note, Paul really loves Jackie, huh? Did you see how attentive he was to her the whole time? How he would look at her so lovingly? What I would give to have a man love me as deeply as Paul loves Jackie.”

“Yeah, I noticed alright.”

Tracy replied grimly.

“What?”

“Oh, nothing. Look, I gotta go. I’ll catch you later, alright?”

“Sure.”

Coming to a junction, they spilt as each went their own way, leaving Tracy to her own thoughts.

Ending on that note of thought, Tracy returned to her duty station.

Back In Jackie’s Hospital Room

Annie got off the bed, and took out a package from one of the bags that she had brought with her to the hospital.

“Here, Jackie. I have a present for you.”

“Thanks Annie, but you don’t have to.”

“Ha! If I didn’t buy you anything, you would have come after me! Go on, open it!”

Delightedly, like a child, Jackie tore open the wrappings, to stare in astonishment at the sight before her. Again, her eyes misted over.

“You remembered!”

“Of course, I remembered. You are my best friend, and my good sister, remember. I have also kept all the get well greetings that people have sent over the past months to the apartment for you. You can look at them when you go back.”

“Oh Annie.” Jackie reached out to give her friend another hug. “I really miss the times when we sleep together, talking to our hearts’ contents till the wee of the night.”

“It hasn’t been long since we did that.” Annie grinned at Jackie’s puzzled look, as once again, she settled herself beside her friend. “When you were in a coma, I would come here and stay at least once a week, but of course, it was only I who did all the talking, you never contribute. Do you know how tiring it is to talk for so long, without any response?”

Joe laughed at that before he mentioned that he, Helen and Carmen had bought something for Jackie as well. It seemed to be the cue as the other guys of the gang too brought out their gifts for Jackie.

“Hey, what about you, Paul? What are you giving to Jackie?”

Henry asked, when he noticed that Paul just stood next to the bed, smiling at the antics of the others.

“Huh? Oh, I... I am going to give it to her later.”

“Why later, and not now?”

Peter asked, puzzled.

“Well, I... that is...”

“Something’s wrong with the guy.” Henry speculated. “Come on, buddies, let’s search him, and see what he’s hiding.”

Paul backed away as the others approach, slapping away wandering hands.

“Hey, hey, stop that!”

“Don’t tease him anymore. You are doctors, remember, you should behave yourself.”

Jackie cried laughingly from her position on the bed.

“Annnieee... I thought you are supposed to be helping me?”

Jackie pretended to throw a mock punch at her friend.

“What, what? I’m rather intrigued myself at what Paul is hiding.”

Annie laughed. At that moment, that was a cry of triumph from Gilbert as he held a small box in his hands, apparently having taken that from one of Paul’s pockets.

“Ah Gil, you’d better return that to me.”

Paul reached out to take the box back.

“Uh uh, I guess that’s our cue to leave. Looks like our lovers need some time alone.”

Joe added, as he glanced at an embarrassed Paul. Jackie, for her part, simply rolled her eyes in exasperation.

“Ok, guys, let’s get out!”

Henry urged, pushing all of them towards the door.

“Bye, Jackie, I will come and see you again tomorrow. Right now, it seems someone wants to be alone with you.”

Annie smiled, and hurried out of the door along with the others.

“Come on, guys, what’s the meaning of this?”

Paul asked as he followed them to the door.

“I don’t think you are supposed to follow us, your place is here.”

Henry said with a wink, before closing the door in the face of a bewildered Paul. The latter, after a minute, finally turned back to look at Jackie sheepishly.

“Those guys......”

Jackie laughed.

“You know how they are like. It’s not as if you have just known them.”
作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-2-17 06:32 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Paul walked towards the bed, and sat down beside her, holding both her hands tightly in his. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />
“I can’t help it.” He pulled his hands away and fingered the box in his hands, before finally gaining his courage. He opened the small box in his hand, and blurted out.
“I love you, Jackie, and I know this may not be the perfect time nor place, but I... Jackie, will you marry me?”
Jackie looked at him shocked. In all her wildest dreams, she had never expected Paul to pop the question to her so soon.
“I know, I know, it may seem like too soon, but when you went into a coma, I realize just how important you really are to me, that how much I need you in my life and I promised myself that as soon as you wake up, I will make you my wife. I don’t want to miss another chance at life with you. So, will you do me the honor of becoming Mrs. Ching?”
Deeply touched by his words, tears formed in Jackie’s eyes, threatening to spill over.
“Paul, I...”
Paul put a finger gently against Jackie’s lips.
“You don’t have to reply me so soon, take your time to decide. After all, this may have come as a shock to you, seeing as how you’ve just woken up.”
She pulled his finger away from her lips, and said in exasperation.
“Can you please let me finish my sentence before you interrupt?”
Paul blushed.
“Oops, sorry.”
“Alright, now listen. I love you too, Paul, this just came as a surprise to me. I can’t imagine how much you have done for me all this while that I was in a coma. And before I say anything more, yes, I will be glad to become Mrs. Ching.”
In a rare show of emotion, Paul let out a whoop and jumped up in delight.
Jackie laughed at his display of happiness.
“Hey, after you are done, come here and give me a kiss, will ya?”
Grinning, Paul hurried over to Jackie, placed the ring that he had bought for her on her finger, and then proceeded to give her a most thorough kiss.
“Thank you for making me the happiest man on earth.”
“And, thank you for making me the happiest woman on earth.”
After a long while, Jackie finally nudged from her comfortable position.
“It’s getting late, Paul. Don’t you have to go home to rest?”
“It’s ok, I can stay here longer, unless you want me to go?”
“No, of course not, but you look exhausted. When was it that you had a proper sleep?”
Paul looked at her sheepishly.
“Well... I... I can sleep here on this chair, it’s the same.”
As if to prove his point, Paul got off the bed, and dragged a chair up next to it, where he proceeded to sit down.
Jackie sighed, unwilling to see her beloved spend another uncomfortable night in a hospital chair.
“Oh, come on.” She scooted over on the bed, and patted the spot next to her. Paul looked at her puzzled. “Oh Paul, one would think that after all this time, you would not be so dense anymore. Here, you can share my bed. We will sleep together tonight, ok?”
Paul smiled.
“No, I’m fine here, I don’t want to spoil your sleep.”
“You will not. And, I’m not going to be so heartless as to let you spend another night on that uncomfortable chair.”
“What about hospital policy?”
“Just this once. They won’t mind. I won’t say, and if you don’t say, who will know, right?”
Jackie grinned that mischievous trademark of hers. It did not take much to persuade Paul as without a moment’s hesitation, he got onto the bed beside her.
“So, you think I’m dense, huh?”
“Well, seeing as how long it took you to finally realize that you love me, and need me......”
“You know what, if I’m not such a good tempered man, I would be very offended by your words.”
Jackie grinned, not at all worried over her plight.
“But, you are not!”
“Nah, I’m just too happy today, nothing can spoil my mood.” Paul hugged her tighter. “Come on, let’s go to sleep.” Gently, he lowered Jackie to the bed, and snuggled behind her, spoon-styled, before pulling the covers over them. It was not long before the two of them fell fast asleep, the first contented and peaceful sleep that the former had in ages. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-2-23 01:09 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Meanwhile
Out In The Corridor <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Helen!”
Tracy called as she saw the nurse heading out of a room.
“Yes, may I help you?”
“Have you seen Dr. Ching anywhere? I’ve been trying to find him for a while.”
“Um, I’m not too sure, but maybe you can check out Dr. Tong’s room. He’s always there whenever he’s not needed elsewhere.”
“Sure, I will do that. Thanks.”
On so saying, Tracy turned and headed down the corridor towards Jackie’s room.
She ended on that note of thought just as she reached Jackie’s room. Without another thought, she opened it, only to find the couple cuddled together on the bed, apparently fast asleep. To her credit, she did not try to enter the room and wake Paul up, but still, jealousy made her shut the door harder than was necessary. However, despite the noise made, the couple did not even nudge from their sleep.
Angrily, Tracy stalked down the corridor, coming to a stop when she saw Helen again.
“So, did you manage to find Dr. Ching?”
The latter enquired.
“Sure, I found him alright. Guess where he was? He was sleeping on the bed with Dr. Tong!”
“That’s so sweet.”
“That’s against hospital policy!”
“Well, considering their relationship, and seeing how much they had gone through to be together, I’m sure the hospital rules can be bent this time.”
“Still, I don’t think they should do that.”
Tracy huffed, before walking off, leaving a bewildered Helen staring after her, wondering what was going on.
“Hey, Tracy, why do you look so angry?”
Anson greeted, as she saw the doctor coming towards her.
“Guess what I just witnessed?”
“What?”
“Paul and Dr. Tong sleeping on the same bed.”
“So?”
“That’s against hospital policy.”
“Tracy,” Anson soothed, walking the other doctor to a quiet corner of the staff lounge. “I think it’s more than hospital policy to you, isn’t it?”
“I have no idea what you are talking about.”
“Yes, you do. You are in love with Dr. Ching, aren’t you?”
“I.... Yes.”
Tracy agreed grudgingly.
“You know what? I was too, at first.”
“You are?”
“Well, I guess many of the females in this hospital are drawn to him by his steadfastness to love, among his other qualities. But, after seeing how much he and Dr. Tong really love each other, I decided that I should just give up the idea.”
“You are giving up just like that?”
“Well, I don’t want to break up such a wonderful couple. They went through a lot to be together finally, you know.”
“I’m not like you, I won’t give up so easily.”
“Traaccyyy...”
Anson warned.
“Forget it. I don’t care. I’ve always gotten what I want all my life, and this time won’t be any different.”
Tracy answered before exiting the room. Anson stared after her, worried about what Tracy might do. She hoped that this did not spell disaster for Paul and Jackie. She really wished the couple well, after seeing how well they fit together.作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-2-23 01:12 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Jackie’s Hospital Room
The Next Day
8.35am <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Morning.”
Paul smiled.
“Good morning yourself. How long have you been awake anyway?”
Jackie asked, when she opened her eyes to find him gazing at her.
“Just a few minutes before you.”
“Don’t you have to go to work already?”
“Nope, it’s my off day today, so I can spend the whole day with you.” Paul grinned. “Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to start your physical therapy.”
She blanched, the day she had been dreading since she woke up was finally here. Even though a doctor herself, and knowing that sooner or later, she would have to start her physical therapy, she was still dreading it all the same. She did not have the courage to attempt to get off the bed from the moment she got up, and she was worried about how she would fare, after not having moved at all these months.
The paleness of Jackie’s face did not escape Paul. He placed his hand on hers.
“Jackie, I know you are scared, I am too, but I will be there for you the whole way, alright? No matter what, you can count on me.”
Jackie blinked back her tears, and gazed at him, determined now to do her best. She could not let this man beside her down again, she had to try her best, not only for her sake, but for his sake too. For their future together, she would have to make sure that she made a full recovery.
“I know, Paul. I will try my best, just don’t expect too much of me at first, alright?”
“You are brave, and you will be fine. I just know it.” He made an attempt at a joke. “And now, stop trying to distract me. We still have to get you to the physical therapy room, remember?”
Jackie laughed.
“How did you know what I was doing?”
The words were barely out of her mouth when a nurse pushed a wheelchair into the room. Paul nodded his thanks before taking over from the former. He pushed the wheelchair to Jackie’s bedside, and bowed gallantly.
“Your carriage awaits, milady.”
Jackie smiled, trying to push back the growing fear in her.
“And, how do you expect me to get into that without your help?”
“Oh, right.”
Grinning devilishly, Paul swooped a startled Jackie into his arms, and onto the wheelchair.
“Oh wow, that was quite some help.”
“Anything for milady. Come on, let’s go, the day will be gone if we delay any longer.”
Trying to brighten the mood, he chatted amiably throughout the trip to the therapy room. The moment they entered the room, Jackie’s face lost her color again upon the sight of all the equipment. The feeling of fear returned, this time, threatening to overwhelm her. She was starting to regret it.
“Umm, Paul, maybe this is still too soon. I think...”
Paul squatted down next to her, taking one of her hands in his.
"Jackie, I know this is hard for you, but you know that the sooner you get started, the faster you can recover, right? I promise you that I will be here all the way for you, and I won’t break that promise. No matter how hard this is going to be, we will be going through it together. Believe me, we will be able to do it together.”
Slowly, upon hearing those words, the fear in Jackie started to recede. She would not go so far as to say that she had gained confidence, but at least, she was determined to do it, and to succeed in the meantime.
“I promise you too, Paul, that I will do my best. I won’t let you down.”
“You won’t be letting me down, I know you can do it, but I want you to do it for yourself too, alright? Not only for me, but for yourself too. And, don’t push yourself too hard, let’s just take it one step at a time, shall we?”
Jackie nodded, earning a smile from Paul.
“Come on, let’s get started.”
He pushed the wheelchair to a low bed.
“We shall start with some simple movements first, alright? And, from here, we shall see where we will go next.”
He lifted Jackie onto the bed, and lay her front down on it,
“You ready?”
Again, she nodded. She was just starting to think that this was not as bad as she had thought after Paul had massaged her back and did some simple exercises with her legs for a while, when sudden excruciating pain shot up her back. She let out a groan, her face contorting in agony.
“Jackie?”
Paul stopped what he was doing, hastening to bend down and look at her face.
“It hurts, it hurts a lot.”
“Honey, I know it does, but pain is good. It means that the blood is starting to circulate smoothly in your body again.”
“I know, just continue what you are doing, I’m alright.”
Knowing that he had to continue, for the good of his loved one, Paul nodded. His heart ached for Jackie, but he knew what he had to do.
“I promise you a good rubdown when we are done here, alright?”
“I will hold you up to that promise.”
Jackie said through gritted teeth, the pain seemingly endless.
Finally, after a couple of hours, it was all over. Paul pushed Jackie back to her room, and kept good his promise. He took out a jar of fragrant cream, before returning to Jackie’s bedside.
“Now, I’m going to put you front down again, and massage you gently with this cream, alright? I promise it won’t hurt this time.”
Jackie grinned, regaining her cheerful self.
“I have been waiting for this moment for the whole morning. Now, get down to work!”
Gently, Paul helped Jackie lie with her front down, earning a startled yelp from her, when he proceeded to untie the back of her hospital gown.
“Paul, what are you doing?”
“How do you expect me to rub the cream on you with you still in your gown? Don’t worry, I’ve locked the door.”
“But... but...”
He smiled, saying as he continued to untie the laces.
“Jackie, have you forgotten who took care of you when you were in a coma all those months? Who, other than Annie, rubbed cream on you so that you won’t get bedsores? Who massaged cream onto your body? I now know your body as intimately as mine.”
“Alright, alright, I get your point. Get on with the message.”
Almost as soon as Paul laid his hands on her, Jackie let out a groan again, but this time, it was one of pleasure, rather than of pain.
“Don’t stop, this feels so good.”
That earned a laugh out of Paul.
“I knew you would like this part of the deal. How about I make a deal with you? Everyday, we will go to therapy together, you without any complaints, and after that, I will give you a massage. How’s that?
“If I can get this kind of treatment everyday, then I don’t mind being tortured. You are on! By the way, that cream smells wonderful.”
“I’m glad you like it cos I have been using it on you for the last fourteen months. This is already the seventh jar.”
Jackie reached behind her to grip Paul’s hand.
“Thank you, Paul. Thank you for everything.”
“There’s no need to say thanks. I want to do it.”
“I love you, you know.”

Back In Jackie’s Hospital Room
2.05pm <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Wow, I’m starting to think that my room is fast becoming a meeting place for you guys during lunch time.”
Jackie joked, as she looked at the crowd in her room. Again, the whole gang was there, with the exception of Annie, but with the addition of Tracy and Anson. They had agreed to tag along when Joe told them that they were all going to visit Jackie, and if they would like to come along as well.
“But, one person’s missing.”
“I thought that as long as Paul’s by your side, you don’t care for anyone else?”
Henry teased, as he noted that Paul seemed to be permanently stuck to Jackie’s side.
“Who says so? I always care for my friends,”
Jackie replied indignantly, earning a round of laughter from the room.
“In that case, the person in question should be here shortly.”
True enough, within minutes, there came a knock at the door and Annie burst in.
“Hey Jackie!”
She greeted, going to sit by her friend’s side at once.
“Don’t you ever get sick of each other?”
Joe wondered aloud.
“NO!”
Both girls replied simultaneously before bursting out in laughter.
“So, how do you feel today? When can you be discharged?”
Annie turned her attention back to Jackie.
“I feel great! In fact, I just went for my physical therapy session this morning with Paul. As for when I can be discharged, you will have to ask my doctor here. And, while you are at it, try to persuade him that I’m a good patient, and should be discharged as soon as possible.”
Jackie grinned. Annie looked at Paul.
“So, what do you say, Doc?”
“It will all have to depend on her performance.”
He shot back.
“He always says that whenever I asked him when I can be discharged.” Jackie muttered. “Since you are my friend, you have to help me to persuade him that I would be fine in no time at all.”
“Oh no, I refuse to be your middle man.” Annie shrank back in mock horror. “Well, dear friend, just listen to your doc, after all, you did give him a fright for 14 long months, you know.”
“I know, which is why I’m not rushing things. Otherwise...”
Jackie brushed a hand through her long hair in exasperation, the action causing the ring on her finger to catch her friend’s attention.
“Uh, Jackie, is there something you should be telling me?”
“Tell you what?”
“That.”
Annie took hold of Jackie’s hand, and pointed to the ring.
“Oh.” Surprisingly, the ever-bold Jackie blushed. “Well, Paul, would you like to do the honor?”
Paul looked at her in exasperation, before proceeding to do what was requested of him.
“I guess this is as good a time as any to announce to you guys that I proposed to Jackie yesterday, and she has agreed to marry me.”
That announcement brought on a round of cheers in the room.
Annie turned to hug her friend immediately.
“Congratulations, Jackie. I know how happy you must be. You definitely deserve the happiness.”
Finishing the hug, she walked over to Paul and gave him a huge hug as well.
“Congrats, Paul. No one earned this more than the two of you. I wish you two all the best. Don’t you dare to bully Jackie though, or I will be sure to come after you.”
She ended with a grin on her face.
Next in line was Henry, who gave him a pat on the back.
“I... I have nothing to say to you.”
“Hey, what is that supposed to mean?”
Gilbert grinned. “Ignore him, Paul, just wait till he’s leg shackled himself. Congrats to you.” He walked to Jackie and gave her a big hug. “Congrats to you too, Jackie. I guess you have been waiting for this moment for a long time already.”
That only earned him a slap on the back by the lady in question.
Everyone crowded round excitedly to congratulate the couple while a single doctor hung back, reluctant to go forward, though knowing that she would not have any choice.
Unfortunately, before long, she was the only one left not having congratulated the couple, so she too, walked forward, in a pretense of sincerity.
After everyone had calmed down again, Jackie turned to her friend, who had once again settled down beside her, their arms around each other.
"So, Annie, when is it going to be your turn?" To the former's astonishment, that question actually made Annie blush. "Uhh... Did I just ask a very sensitive question?"
"No, you did not."
Annie hastened to reassure her friend. Jackie looked to Henry for an answer, but he only shrugged in response.
"Don't look at me. Ask her."
"So, Annie?"
"Umm... Henry did pose that question to me, but I rejected." Before Jackie could open her mouth, Annie added simply. "I just couldn’t, not with you in a coma."
"Oh, Annie."
By this time, everyone in the room was intrigued by the conversation, as they all strained forward to hear the rest of it.
"Also, do you still remember our promise?"
Jackie nodded, understanding. "That we will be each other's maid of honor, whoever gets married first." She hugged her friend. "Oh, Annie, I’m so sorry."
"Don't be. It was my choice."
"And, you would have that choice again."
Paul interrupted, with a glint in his eyes, as he looked at Gilbert and Joe, giving a slight nod in Henry's direction. Before Henry knew what had hit him, the three men swooped on him, pushing him in the direction of Annie.
"Go on, ask the question, I'm sure the answer will be different this time."
Paul urged.
"I just hate it when you guys do that."
"Do what?" Gilbert asked innocently. "I may not like you for a brother-in-law, but for the sake of my dear sister, I won't say anything."
Annie looked at the guys in exasperation.
"Oh, just forget it, will ya. It's over and done with."
"No, it's not." Henry suddenly spoke up, deciding that he might as well play along. He took out a ring box from his pocket, and kneeled before her. "Annie, I love you, and I promised you before that I will change my old ways, and be a good husband to you. Now that Jackie has woken up, I'm going to ask you again. Will you do me the honor of marrying me?"
Annie lowered her head, touched that Henry would actually ask her to marry him in front of everyone. After a moment, she nodded her head shyly. Before she could do anything else, she was caught up in a hug by the latter, with her lips engaged in a deep kiss. It took her a minute to reorient herself to the surroundings, and acknowledge the fact that they were not alone. She pushed back from Henry, and nudged him hard.
"We are not alone."
"Who cares, they started this first."
Henry retorted, though he let her go willingly.
Again, the scene of a while ago was repeated as everyone crowded round to congratulate the couple.
"Hey, I have an excellent idea. Why don’t the four of you get married on the same day?"
Gilbert suggested.
Paul and Henry looked at each other in askance, and shrugged. Paul answered for the two of them.
"We are fine with the idea, but I think you should ask the ladies."
Jackie and Annie shared a look.
"Annie?"
"As long as you guys don’t mind, Jackie and I would love to."
"So, it's settled then." Joe rubbed his hands in glee. "This is going to be a good show."
Jackie could not resist retorting.
"Do you think we are acting?"
Helen jabbed her boyfriend hard in the side.
"eople are talking serious business here, stop kidding around."
"What, what? What did I say?"
Joe protested.
While everyone's attention was on Joe and throwing remarks back and forth, Paul made use of the chance to stoop down and whisper in Jackie's ear.
"Do you feel tired? Do you need a rest?"
Jackie covered his hand with her.
"I'm fine, don't worry." She searched his eyes. "You don't mind that we will be sharing our wedding day with Henry and Annie, do you?"
"No, of course not, as long as you like it."
"You are the best, do you know that? I love you."
"And, I love you too."
Subtly, he leaned down to place a gentle kiss on Jackie's lips.
On the other side of the room, however, that intimate gesture did not escape someone's eyes as she looked at the scene before her with growing resentment.
For the next two months, Paul went with Jackie to every physical therapy session without fail, and as promised, gave her a massage after every single one of them. Jackie, for her part, kept her side of the promise, as despite all the pains and agonies, she did not even utter a single sound of protest. Before long, Jackie had made tremendous improvement, and was able to stand on her own.

Jackie’s Room In The Hospital
2 Months Later
9.05am <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
Jackie woke up to see Paul still sleeping soundly beside her. She caressed his face lovingly. She was glad to see that the lines of exhaustion were finally starting to go away. Maybe it was not such a bad idea after all that she demanded he share her bed every night. Otherwise, he would not be able to recover all the sleep that he had lost. Right now, she only cared how her beloved was faring, and not some hospital policy. She knew some hospital staff had spotted them sleeping on the same bed, but she was confident that they would not spread the word, having worked so closely with them once before.
Paul woke up while she was still lost in her thoughts, thus giving him some time to gaze at her, and gather his own thoughts.
“A penny for your thoughts?”
Jackie asked upon seeing that Paul had woken up as well.
“Nothing, I was just thanking my lucky stars that you are fine and here with me. There’s nothing more I want out of life.”
The former smiled.
“I’m thanking my lucky stars too, that I can be with you again. And that you are finally starting to look normal again.”
“Hey, what do you mean by that? Don’t I look normal usually?”
“Nope, you don’t. You’ve been looking exhausted from the moment I woke up. I’m just glad that you are finally looking like your old self again, and gaining some weight in the process too. You have been getting too thin lately!”
“I’m so glad you approve.” He laughed. “We won’t have to go to therapy today, so what do you want to do?”
“Well, I’m so tired of staying in this hospital room the whole day other than going for therapy. So, how about taking a walk in the garden?”
“Sure, as long as you feel up to it.”
“Oh yes, please.”
Paul laughed at the child-like eagerness in Jackie.
“Alright then.” He got off the bed, and helped her off as well.
“Uhh, Paul.”
“Yep?”
“Let me make a stop at the bathroom first, will ya?”
That caused a laugh out of him.
“Of course, whatever the lady wants.”
Carefully, he helped Jackie to the bathroom, waiting outside for her patiently. When the latter was done, he made a stop himself, before putting his arms around her and finally setting off to the garden.
“Hey, Dr. Tong, you are finally on your feet. How do you feel?”
Helen cried excitedly, walking towards the couple.
“I feel great. Thanks.”
“ I won’t disturb you guys then. I will see you later.”
They were stopped by several more hospital staff, who was glad to see that Jackie had woken up at last, before they eventually managed to make their way to the garden. Paul settled Jackie carefully on a bench before he joined her, once again hugging her close. Jackie, on her part, simply placed her head on his shoulder contentedly.
“Whew, I thought we would never get here, not that I’m not appreciative of everyone’s concern.”
“You have no idea how concerned everyone had been, I think most of the hospital staff had dropped in at least once to see you while you were in a coma.”
“I know, and I really appreciate that. Hmm.... Don’t you just love the sun? And how it shines on everything?”
Jackie teased, trying to bring Paul out of the solemn mood that he seemed to have fallen into.
“Huh?”
“I thought you need some cheering up.”
“And, I thought I am supposed to be the one doing the cheering up.”
Paul retorted.
Jackie shrugged. “We will see.” Suddenly, she fell into a reminiscing mood. “I never thought how much I would miss this sight. The sight of sunlight falling onto the ground, dappling between the leaves. Life’s just so precious, don’t you think?”
Paul hugged her tighter.
“After what we had just gone through, I would definitely agree with you.”
“Paul...”
“Shh... I think we should just enjoy this moment for itself, don’t you think so?”
Jackie nodded, contented to just sit there with her fiancé. Thus, they spent the better part of an hour just sitting on the bench, enjoying each other’s company, and the world in general.
Unbeknownst to them, a pair of eyes that shone with jealousy was staring at them from a window.作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-2 07:42 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Jackie’s Room In The Hospital
A Week Later
11.14am <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Oh wow, I can’t believe that I’m finally leaving this place! I have never been so glad to get out of the hospital before!”
Jackie cried, as she walked about the room restlessly.
Paul looked after her in amusement.
“I know that you have recovered but still, you shouldn’t be doing so much walking about just on the first day that you can get out of bed by yourself.”
Jackie hurried across the room to hug him from behind.
“I’m just so happy. It seems like I am starting a new life, which is true to some extent.”
“Oh, sorry, did I disturb you guys?”
Annie joked as she entered the room at that moment.
“Nope, you are not. Don’t worry.”
Jackie answered as she released Paul and turned to face her friend.
“So, are you packed and ready to go home?”
Annie asked, staring at the bags on the bed.
“Am I ever! I can’t wait to get out of here.”
“I never thought that I would ever hear that from you.”
“Well, if you had lived in the hospital for more than a year, you would say that too.”
Paul smiled at them, before turning to Jackie worriedly.
“I still think that I should take the day off and send you home. You sure you don’t want to come to my house and stay for a while? I can take care of you.”
“Paul, don’t worry about me. You know that you couldn’t take today off. Anyway, Annie can take care of me, she’s going to bring me home. And nope, I don’t think I want to stay at your house at the moment, I miss my own.”
Jackie grinned.
“Right! Don’t worry, Paul. I will bring her straight home and tuck her right into bed. I will make sure that she stays there. She will be fine, trust me.”
Annie added, seeing the worried look on Paul’s face.
However, despite all the reassurances, Paul was still concerned about not being able to send Jackie home personally.
“Ok, we are all set, let’s go!”
Jackie cried exuberantly, reaching out to take her bags.
“Here, let me.”
Paul managed a smile in spite of his uneasiness. He took a bag with one hand, and with the other, placed it around Jackie’s shoulders, while Annie carried the other one.
Jackie placed her own arm around Paul’s waist, and squeezed it reassuringly.
“I will be fine. I will see you in After Five tonight, alright?”
Paul kissed her forehead.
“Fine, I’ll see you then.”
On the way out of the hospital, they were greeted by many hospital personnel, all of whom were glad to see that Dr. Tang had finally woken up and appeared to be none the worse for wear. With all the interruptions, it took them a while before they finally managed to reach the entrance of the hospital. Annie put down the bag that she was carrying and told Jackie to wait for her while she went to pick up her car.
Before long, Paul was waving them off as he watched the car disappear into the distance. With a sigh, he reentered the hospital, knowing that the day was going to be too long for him. 作者: clover3334 时间: 2005-3-2 03:49 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

Jackie and Annie’s Apartment
Half An Hour Later <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
Annie unlocked the door to the apartment and allowed Jackie to enter before her. The moment Jackie stepped into the apartment; she wandered around in wonder, touching everything in sight. Tears gathered in her eyes as she stared at things that were so familiar to her, yet foreign in others. Annie came up behind her, putting an arm around her.
“Jackie, are you alright? Here, drink some water.”
Jackie took the glass from her, whispering her thanks.
“I can’t believe that I’m back again, back where I belong. It feels so good to be home, you know. I have really missed all this, I didn’t even realize how much till I stepped in here. Annie, you really kept everything exactly as they were, didn’t you?”
Annie nodded.
“I didn’t want to change anything. I knew that you would wake up one day, and wouldn’t want to come home to a foreign place. Here, take a look at your room. I have kept it clean for you all these months, wanting you to come back to exactly how you have left it.”
Jackie entered her room, repeating what she had done from the moment she stepped into the apartment, caressing everything in sight, as if to reconcile herself with all her belongings, or to reassure herself that she was truly home. After making a round of her room, she turned to Annie, who was standing at the doorway and gave her a huge hug.
“Thank you, thank you so much.”
“There’s no need for thanks. Just the sight of you standing here in this room is enough thanks for me. Anyway, what are sisters for?” Annie smiled. “And now, it’s time to do what I’ve promised Paul, or else he will have my head tonight. Back to bed with you!”
On so saying, she gave Jackie a push towards the bed.
“Hey, hey, I’m not an invalid, I don’t need to stay in bed the whole day. And, I’m so tired of staying in bed all the time too!”
“Don’t forget you are still recovering.”
“I’m fine, maybe just a little hungry.”
“How about I whip something up in the kitchen while you rest? I will wake you when the food is ready.”
“You can cook?”
Jackie asked incredulously.
Annie pretended offense.
“A person can change in more than a year, you know.”
“Or change because of someone.”
Jackie teased.
“I’m not talking to you anymore. If you don’t get into bed right this minute, I’m telling you-know-who.”
“I’m going, I’m going. There’s no need for threats!”
Jackie laughed as she hopped onto bed. With a laugh, Annie turned and headed out of the room. It was not long before the former gave up her pretense of resting, and stood up to wander about the room again. It was while she was browsing through her belongings that a thought that had been nagging her for days came to the foreground, prompting her to get out of the room in search of her friend.
“Annie!”
“What, what? Is there something wrong?”
Startled by Jackie's cry, Annie rushed out of the kitchen.
“No, no, everything is fine. I just need you to do me a favor.”
“Sure, just name it.”
“Can you please drive me to Paul’s apartment?”
Annie’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you up to now? You know that you are supposed to stay in bed, by your doctor’s orders.”
“I’m fine, truly. There’s just something urgent that I should have done the moment I woke up, but I couldn’t remember what it was until now.”
It only took a minute before Annie relented, having seen the determined look in Jackie’s eyes.
“Alright, hold on a moment while I turned off the stove.”
Eagerly, Jackie nodded before bounding off to get her handbag.

They were finally in the car and on the way before Jackie made a request.

“Can you please stop by a supermarket?”

“Whatever. I’m already on the road anyway, what does one more stop make?”

Annie muttered.

“Thanks, Annie. I owe you one.”

Jackie grinned as she settled back on her seat.

They made the stop with Annie lifting her brows at the things that Jackie bought from the supermarket, though she refrained from making a comment, having learnt about the boxes from her brother.

As expected, there was no one in Paul’s apartment except for Gilbert. He was surprised to see the both of them upon opening the door, but when he saw what Jackie was carrying, he understood at once the reason they were there. Before the latter could ask anything, he started talking, the words reminiscent of those that they had exchanged more than a year ago.

“Yep, you can enter his room, there’s no one there right now. And nope, I won’t tell this to a soul, it will be our little secret.”

Smiling happily, Jackie continued to Paul’s room, leaving the siblings staring after her in amusement. The both of them were just settling down on the couch when Jackie appeared again, this time, with a purple box in her hands.

“Look at all these stuff! They have all expired! Why didn’t Paul finish them?”

It was Gilbert who answered her query.

“Because he was hardly home the entire time you were in a coma. He didn’t want to be too far away from you, so, he spent every minute that he had in the hospital, not taking any leave, medical or otherwise.”

Jackie slumped down onto the couch.

“I didn’t know.”

Annie wrapped her arms around her friend.

“But all that is over and done with now. Paul really did a lot for you and he loves you dearly. What you should do now is treasure your relationship with him, and let him know how much you appreciate him.”

“I didn’t know. But don’t worry, I will definitely let him know that I truly appreciate everything that he has done.” And again, true to her mischievous nature, she could not resist adding. “Since when you have become an expert on love, huh, Annie?”

Upon completing that statement, she managed to jump up and run off before Annie’s playful swat could land on her behind.
作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-19 06:20 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

<font color=" />
Even though Tracy was talking to Paul, his eyes kept straying to the door and he could not seem to concentrate on the conversation. Just an hour earlier, he had arrived at the pub with Tracy, who had announced that her car had broken down and was sent to the garage for repairs. She had thus requested for a ride from Paul to After Five, where most of Jackie’s friends had gathered to celebrate her recovery.
At the moment, everyone had arrived except for the main star and her buddy. Finally, Tracy gave up on her one–sided attempt at a conversation and sat there in a huff. Anson, who had witnessed everything, simply shook her head, wondering when the lady would give up her attempt at trying to get together with Paul. It was so obvious to everyone who bothered to look that he only had eyes for one lady, and that was definitely not the one who was sitting beside him at the moment.
“Paul! Paul!”
Henry waved his hand in front of Paul’s eyes, trying to get his attention.
“Huh? What?”
“Stop looking at the door and your watch! They are late, but they will be here. Stop worrying about Jackie, I just talked to Annie, she’s fine, they are just held up.”
“I know, I talked to Jackie a while ago too. It’s just that...”
“Don’t bother him, Henry. He won’t be of much use till Jackie turns up.”
Peter teased, having overheard their conversation.
Expecting a retort, all he received in return was an exasperated look by the man in question before the latter resumed alternating between looking at his watch and the door.
Suddenly, Paul’s eyes lit up and he stood up, startling all those around him. In unison, knowing smiles spread across their faces as they turned to look at the door, expecting to see the star of the day entering the pub. True enough, there were Annie and Jackie sauntering into the pub, arm in arm.
“Hey! Wow, everyone’s here already!" Jackie greeted before bestowing a smile on the man of her life.
“You are so late! We were going to kick Paul out of here till you come.” Henry chided gently as he placed an arm around Annie’s shoulders.
“We had something to do.” She replied.
Everyone shuffled around to make space for the couples as Tracy was urged to sit elsewhere in order to make way for the couples.
“No, no, it’s ok, I can just sit here.” Jackie protested.
“We wouldn’t dream of it. Who knows what Paul will do next. It’s better if you stick to him for the rest of the night.” Joe grinned.
“What did I do?” Paul retorted.
“That’s precisely it. You did nothing! Ahh, so now, you’ve regained your ability to talk again?”
“Did I miss anything?” Jackie asked from her place beside Paul. Tracy, having no choice, had unwillingly given her seat to Jackie, leaving the two couples snuggled comfortably on the couch.
“Nothing at all.” Gilbert chirped in. “He was so dead before you arrive.”
Jackie turned to her fiancé.
“Were you?”
“Don’t listen to the boys. They just like to utter nonsense.”
“You can deny it all you want, but we have so many witnesses here!”
Peter added, unable to resist the temptation of jibing at Paul.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Paul replied before turning to Jackie. “So, how do you feel?”
“I’m fine, really. Stop worrying about me.” Jackie smiled at him in assurance, giving his hand a squeeze. She turned to look at the others. “So, what have you guys planned for me?”
“How about a drink first?” Helen suggested. “We’ve already had a couple, you should order something too.”
“I will go get it.” Annie said, standing up. “What do you want, Jackie?”
“A vodka, thanks.”
“Change that to a lime tonic, will you, Annie? Thanks. Just put it on my tab.”
“Will do.”
She replied before walking off.
“Hey, what did you do that for?”
Jackie jabbed a finger at Paul’s chest.
“In case you have forgotten, my dear girl, you are still on medication, and not supposed to be taking any alcoholic drinks.”
“Oh yeah, I forgot.” She grinned sheepishly. She turned to the others curiously. “So, what were you talking about before I got here?”
“Like we said, nothing.” Joe insisted. “You should have seen Dr. Ching’s face. I’m glad he’s not like that in the hospital.”
“Hey, what are you talking about? Since I’m in a good mood today, I will let you off. Joke all you want, I don’t mind.” <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
Paul grinned, thwarting their plans to make fun of him.
Just then, Annie arrived with their drinks.
Gilbert grabbed his and stood up.
“Let me propose a toast. A toast to the luckiest lady in the world. A lady who managed to join us again against all odds.”
“And a toast to my best friend, who managed to come back to us again.”
Annie added, by Henry’s side. By now, everyone had stand up and was joining in the toasting.
“Not to forget a toast to congratulate our couples on their impending marriages.”
Helen smiled.
“Hear, hear!”
Everyone echoed, before clicking their glasses together and each taking a sip from their respective glasses. As for the couples in question, they shared an intimate smile with their respective halves and gently clicked their glasses against each other’s before taking a sip too.
It took a moment for all the excitement to die down and everyone to settle back down in their seats. Before long though, the bantering that was so much a part of the group started. Comments were thrown at one another with amazing speed, leaving those who did not know the group well, fascinated.
Suddenly, Joe threw a question at Paul.
“So, when is this wedding of yours going to be? Have you decided on the best man and maid of honor yet?”
“Oh right.” Jackie, having caught the second question, turned to look at Annie in askance. “Since we are both going to be married on the same day, we can’t be each other’s maid-of-honor, of course. So, who’s going to be ours?”
The latter laughed.
“We never thought of that when we decided to get married on the same day, did we?”
The two ladies pondered for a moment, before both heads popped up.
“I can tell that you have the same idea as I do.” Jackie grinned. “Now, what are you thinking?”
“The same as you. Let’s go against tradition and just totally go without maids-of-honor, shall we?”
“That’s what I thought so too. Fine, since you are alright with it, that’s just what we will do.”
Paul turned back to Joe, after witnessing this scene.
“So, does that answer your question?”
“Yes, it does, but what about the other questions? When’s the wedding, and who’s the best man?”
“If there are no maid-of-honor, it will look weird if there’s a best man, won’t it, Joe?”
Henry drawled, cutting into the conversation.
“Damn, and I was so looking forward to being the best man too.”
Gilbert slapped his knee in mock disappointment.
That proved to be the wrong thing to say, as both Annie and Jackie got up from their comfortable positions and approached him, each placing an arm around his shoulder.
“Uh oh, I don’t think I want to see this.”
Paul muttered, though he was grinning all the while.
“That will teach you to open your mouth at the wrong time. Haven’t you learn something yet about the two forces combined after all this time?”
Henry could not resist jibing at Gilbert.
“So, brother, you wanna be the best man?”
“Hey, Ah Gil, you want to be the best man?”
“I... I don’t think so now, I can feel a sense of threat in the air.”
“Hey, what threats? We never threaten anyone, do we, Annie?”
“Nope, never. So, bro, what do you say? Do you or do you not want to be the best man?”
“And, what if I do, and what if I do not?”
“If you do, we will just have to look for the maid-of-honor for you, don’t we, Jackie? Imagine the best man without a partner.”
“I should never have opened my mouth.” Gilbert muttered. “Forget it, I don’t want to be a best man anymore, I don’t trust your tastes.”
Jackie nudged him.
“What do you mean by not trusting our tastes?”
Annie jabbed him in the side.
“Do we have such poor tastes?”
“Alright, I give up, I surrender. I don’t want to be your best man anymore, alright?”
On so saying, Gilbert threw up his hands, and escaped, leaving the two ladies laughing after him.
“What did we do?”
Annie looked at Jackie, her eyes twinkling.
“Nothing that I know of.” The latter replied, grinning. “Hey, I’m going for another drink, you want one too?”
“Sure, hold on, let me go with you.”
As they got up to go to the bar, they asked if anyone else wanted a refill.
“Nope, not me, I have enough for tonight. Jackie, remember, no alcoholic drinks for you.”
Jackie let out an exasperated sigh.
“Yeah, yeah, I know. Come on, Annie, let’s go.”
She linked her arm through her best friend, and the two of them sauntered off to the bar together, unaware of the many pairs of eyes that followed them. Some with love shining out of them, some envious of the obvious closeness between the two of them, and some simply admiring the sight that the two of them presented.
“So, how did the two of them become such close friends?”
Anson inquired, taking a sip out of her drink.
“Before Jackie went into a coma, they had been living as apartment mates for a long time, and they had known each other for a while. If you want to know the details, you will just have to ask either one of them.”
Gilbert replied with a shrug. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-19 06:23 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Just then, there was a shout from behind them, and all eyes swiveled to the source. Both Paul and Henry got to their feet instantly, having discovered where the source of trouble was, while their other friends too, followed. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

“What happened?”
Paul asked.
“Nothing serious.” Jackie replied. “Hey, Andy, give me another drink, will ya? I just wasted mine.”
“Sure, no prob. Anything for you.”
Andy grinned.
Henry glared at Annie.
“Will you at least tell us what had happened here?”
“Nothing serious, as Jackie had just said.”
“But, we all just saw you throwing your drink at the guy.”
Peter looked around for the man, who, unfortunately, was gone by now. Fortunately for him, he knew when to retreat in the face of five other men.
“These gals are really good.” Andy grinned, placing two new drinks in front of them. “These drinks are on the house.”
“Now, what did they do?”
Gilbert asked in exasperation, impatient with all the avoidance of the real issue.
“Thanks, Andy. We really appreciate it.”
On so speaking, the two ladies grabbed their drinks, and escaped the scene, sure of what was to follow, and wanting to avoid it.
“Andy?”
Joe asked.
“Well, that guy was drunk. He came forward suddenly, and put his arms around Dr. Tong and Lawyer Jiang without any warning, trying to cozy up to them. In defense, they simply dumped their drinks on him, much too light of a punishment, if you ask me. Then you guys came along.”
Annie and Jackie hurried to their seats, pretending that nothing unusual had happened, as they prepared for the outburst that was sure to come soon.
True enough, their respective partners, and close friends were quick to jump to their defense.
Henry let out a growl.
“He’s lucky he got away quick. If I ever get my hands on that guy....”
“If you want, we can still go out and look for him.”
Peter suggested.
That suggestion earned an alarm look from both ladies as they jumped to their feet again, hurrying to their side.
“Paul...”
“Henry...”
“There’s no harm done. So, stop making such a big fuss out of it.” Jackie said, glaring at Peter. “And, stop making such suggestions. We are fine, so will you guys stop making such a big fuss?”
“That’s why we want to settle things by ourselves. You guys are creating a scene. Look at how everyone is staring at us already!”
Annie dragged Henry back to their table, with Jackie doing the same to Paul. Left with no other options, the other guys too followed them back to their seats.
“What happened?”
Helen asked Joe anxiously.
“Ask the two of them. They were the one who got into trouble, but refused to let us do anything.”
“It’s not a big deal. We came out unharmed.”
Jackie retorted, before repeating what had happened to the others who had been waiting anxiously. At the end of the recitation, Annie cut in.
“And, we are grateful of you guys being so defensive of us, we really appreciate it. Don’t we, Jackie?”
“Yep, we are. Thank you!”
Jackie grinned, leaning in to kiss Paul, hoping to kiss the scowl off his face. Just as she expected, it worked. Paul simply squeezed her in return, but at least, the scowl had disappeared. She got up to give each of her friends a hug, with Annie doing the same. That proved to be the right thing to do, as the mood brightened considerably. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-19 06:24 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

“Paul, I’m fine, stop worrying. I just did not want to be the cause of you all late for work tomorrow.” Jackie grinned, trying to soften her tone. “Send me home?”
“Of course.”
“Paul, what about me? My car is still in the garage, remember?”
Tracy asked, having overheard their conversation. She came up beside Paul, linking her arm through his. Uncomfortable, Paul pulled away from her, and walked quickly to Jackie’s side, placing his arm around her.
“Uhh...”
The latter, confident of Paul’s love and loyalty for her, was amused at the scene.

<font color=" />
“Are you happy tonight?”
Paul asked, bringing their joined hands up to her lips.
“Yes, I am. Thank you very much for everything.”
She leaned up to drop a kiss on his lips. Then, remembering they had an audience, quickly resumed her position. She turned around and called.
“Hey, Tracy, are you drunk? You are walking so slowly, or are we boring you?”
Tracy, already angry at the turn of things, and not used to the way of bantering of the gang, took offense at her words.
“Nope, I’m not drunk!”
She hastened her steps to match the couple, coming up beside them.
Jackie looked questioningly at Paul, who gave her a shrug. She tried again.
“So, how are you? I have not seen you for a while.”
“I’m not the one who's sick, so why should anyone visit me?”
Giving up, Jackie decided to leave the doctor alone for the moment, unsure of what was bothering her.
In silence, the trio walked to Paul’s car. He opened the back door for Tracy before hurrying to open the passenger door for Jackie. While on the way to Tracy’s house, Paul kept sneaking glances at Jackie, wanting to make sure that she was truly fine, and not just saying that to reassure him. It was in one of those glances that he noticed her give a slight shiver.
“Are you cold?”
“Just a little.”
“Why didn’t you say something earlier?” He chided gently. He lowered the air-conditioner of the car and turned to Tracy, who was sitting silently in the back seat. “Tracy, can you please pass me my jacket?”
“Sure.”
Tracy replied, before handing his jacket to him.
He stopped at a red light, and took the chance to place his jacket over Jackie. The latter smiled her thanks at him.
“Do you feel warmer now?”
“Uh hmm....”
“Sleepy, huh?”
“Just a little.” Jackie smiled, and placed her head on his shoulder. “But, I’m very comfortable the way I am.”
Taking his eyes off the road for an instant, Paul pressed a kiss onto Jackie’s forehead, giving a squeeze to her hands.
“Take a nap if you like, I will wake you up when we are home.”
That sweet action, of course, did not escape the eyes of Tracy, who fumed silently. When she heard Paul’s words, that made her even more furious.
Paul drove to a stop in front of Tracy’s apartment building. The sudden change in momentum woke Jackie up from her sleep. Disoriented, she sat up and looked around, taking a moment to get her bearings.
Paul told her, in response to her confused look.
“Oh right, sorry, I knocked out there for a moment.”
“That’s alright, you have reason to be tired.” Paul replied before turning to look at Tracy. “Here we are! See you in the hospital tomorrow.”
“Thanks a lot, Paul, really appreciate it.”
Tracy managed to hide the anger in her eyes just in time, as Paul turned to look at her.
“Goodnight, Tracy.”
Jackie called out.
“Goodnight, you guys. I will see you tomorrow.”
Tracy alighted and walked towards her building. She turned around in time to see the car drive off. A determined look entered her eyes as she saw the car’s taillights disappear into the distance. She had never failed to get anything that she wanted, not even when she was young, and this time would not be any exception. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-19 06:26 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

Paul looked at her incredulously, almost running them off the lane.
“Tracy. She likes you.”
“What? Are you crazy?”
“Hey, hey, I was just stating a fact. Stop reacting so strongly. Don’t worry, Paul, I have the most trust in you.”
“You’d better. And, I don’t know what makes you say that either.”
“It’s a woman’s intuition, and you should know that it’s very reliable.”
“Are you sure?” Paul grinned. “So, you sure you don’t want to stay over at my apartment tonight?”
“Nope, I don’t think so. I want to sleep in my own bed for once, it’s been so long.”
“Well, I won’t force you. You know that you are welcome over at my place any time.”
“Yep, I know that.”
Paul reached over to pat Jackie’s hand as he pulled into an empty slot in the garage.
“You don’t have to come up if you are too tired.”
“What do you take me for?” Paul grumbled as he locked his car and wrapped an arm around Jackie’s shoulders. “Of course, I’m going up. I have to make sure that you reach home safely, and I’m gonna tuck you into bed too.”
“You are too good to be true, you know.”

<font color=" />
She took out her keys to open the door while Paul leaned against the wall beside her, waiting. The sight that greeted her the instant she entered the apartment made her grin and turn to Paul.
“Shh... Let’s go straight to my room, shall we?”
Annie, who had heard the door open with all the whisperings, removed her lips from Henry’s and dropped her head onto his shoulder, while the latter simply let out a loud sigh. She called out just when Jackie pulled Paul along behind her towards her room.
“Are we invisible or what?”
“We just didn’t want to disturb you guys. You seem to be enjoying yourselves a lot.”
Came the reply.
“Cut it out, Jackie. Come here, will you?”
Annie replied, exasperated, as she got off Henry’s lap to sit beside him on the couch.
Grinning, Jackie pulled Paul with her back to the living room, where she took a seat on one of the single couches, leaving Paul to lounge on one of its arm.
“So...”
“So, what? So, how are you feeling?”
“I wish everyone would stop asking me how I’m feeling.” Jackie complained good-naturedly. “And, don’t you change the subject, my dear.”
“Are we on any subjects that I’m not aware of?” Annie retorted. “Anyway, what took you so long to get back here?” She asked slyly.
Paul rolled his eyes and looked at Henry.
“Shall we leave them to it? There’s no telling when they will stop, we’d better get out before it turns destructive.”
“I totally agree with you. There’s simply no telling what these girls will do.”
Those comments made the two ladies turn to their respective halves simultaneously.
“What do you mean we are destructive?”
“Uh oh, we’d better go. They are turning deadly.”
Henry laughed, stumbling out of the couch.
Paul turned to a laughing Jackie.
“Well, I guess I will get going as well. See you tomorrow.”
“I thought you said you were going to tuck me in?”
“If you want me to...”
“Nah, just kidding. Good night. Drive carefully, will you?’
“Sure.” Paul answered before dropping a kiss onto Jackie’s forehead. “Goodnight.”

<font color=" />
“Oh well, I’m just going to wash up and turn in.”
Jackie exclaimed, pushing herself off the couch.
“It’s been a long day, huh?”
Annie nodded understandingly.
“Yep, but every minute is worth it.”
Jackie grinned, walking towards the bathroom.
She was just preparing for bed when there came a knock at the door and it opened to admit Annie.
“I just wanted to see if you need anything before I turn in.”
“Nope, I’m perfectly alright.” Jackie replied, gesturing for her friend to sit on the bed. “Annie, I feel fine now, you don’t have to keep fussing over me, not that I don’t appreciate it.”
Annie snuggled beside Jackie on the bed, tucking the comforter around them.
“I can’t help it, it’s just that... it’s so different here without you around, you know. I just felt so helpless when you first fell into a coma, there wasn’t anything that I could do, there was nothing that I could do to help, I...”
Jackie reached up to gently wipe the tears off her friend’s cheeks. She had always known Annie to be a strong person, stronger than any other girls that she knew. But ever since she had woken up from a coma, she had seen tears in Annie’s eyes more times than she could ever remember seeing. And, she felt terrible for being the one to put them there.
“Annie, I’m sorry. I... I didn’t mean to cause you so much pain. I...”
“Don’t apologize, it’s not your fault anyway. What matters is that you are now well and healthy beside me.” Annie gathered herself. “Oh wow, do you realize that this is the first time in ages that we are actually sitting down together and talking, not that we didn’t do so in the hospital, but this is different.”
Jackie grinned.
“I get what you mean. Home sweet home. I can’t believe that I actually miss my bed.”
“Your bed, or someone?”
Annie nudged her.
“Aaanniiieee....”
Jackie growled threateningly.
“Oh come on, Jackie. I heard all about it, how Paul would share your bed in the hospital room each night.”
Jackie looked at her, surprised.
“You knew? How?”
“Henry, of course.”
“He knew too?”
“Jackie, I think the whole hospital knows about it.”
“And, no one sees fit to inform me?”
“We see no reason to, when not even the hospital heads are complaining, why should the others? Don’t worry, no one’s gossiping about you and Paul, we all know how much you deserve each other.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
Jackie answered wryly.
“I think I’d better head back to my own room. I guess you’d want to savor the feeling of being in your own bed again. Call me if you need anything during the night.”
“Annie.”
Jackie sighed.
“Oh right, I forgot. Well, just let me fuss over you for the moment, you may never get such a chance again. I don’t just fuss over anyone, you know.”
“Yeah, yeah, except for Henry.” Jackie dodged the pillow that Annie threw at her. “Goodnight!’

Hospital
The Next Day

<font color=" />
Jackie sneaked into Paul’s office in the hospital, and took out the snack box that she had given Paul, which seemed like ages ago. She opened it to find that there were still a few packets of snacks left inside, although they were already expired, just like those she had found in the snack box back at Paul’s apartment. She felt a sense of dèja vu as she took out those expired packets, and replaced them with new ones. She half expected Paul to open the door and come in at any second, though she knew he probably would not, since he was supposed to be doing an operation at the moment. Hence, there was a look of almost comical surprise on her face when the door opened and Paul entered the room.
“Umm..... Why does this scene look so familiar?”
Paul grinned at the look of utter shock and surprise on Jackie’s face, which left her mouth hanging open.
“You are not supposed to be here.”
“Just carry on with what you are doing. Pretend I’m not here.”
Jackie sighed. “Since you are already here, I might as well ask you something.” She gestured to the packets of snacks that she had removed from the box. “Do you know that these are expired? I understand why those at your apartment are expired, but why are these too? I know you’ve spent almost every minute that you have here in the hospital, so these should be long gone by now.”
“Oh that.” Paul rubbed his nape sheepishly. “It’s silly, now that one thinks of it, but at that time, when you were still in a coma, I couldn’t bear to touch these. I keep getting the feeling that once I finished them up, you will be gone, just like them. Yet, on the other hand, I was also tempted to finish them, and hope that when I finished the last packet, you would wake up, since you promise that these boxes would never be empty.”
“Oh, Paul,” Jackie walked over to him, and hugged him tightly. “ That’s not silly, it’s so sweet. Well, now that I’m here again, I can promise you now that they will never be empty.” She gave him another squeeze before stepping out of his arms back to his desk. “Now, scoot. I have a job to finish.”
“Yes, madam.”
Paul grinned, retrieving the file he had come to the office for, in the first place, and gave a last adoring look at Jackie before stepping out of the room as ordered. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-26 01:53 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
As soon as Jackie finished what she had come to the hospital to do, she stepped out of the office in search of Paul. Almost as if her feet had a will of their own, she found herself in the A & E department. She was there just in time to catch a glimpse of Henry and Joe attempting to save a badly injured man. She was just turning to go when she heard her name being called. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Jackie!”
Pasting a smile on her face, she turned back to see Henry heading her way.
“Hi! I thought you were busy.”
“I’m done for the moment, Joe and Tracy can handle the rest. Here to find Paul?”
“Uh huh. I guess I will go look for him now. I’d better let you get back to your work.”
“Don’t worry, you are not disturbing me.” Seeing the bittersweet look in her eyes, Henry could not resist asking. “You miss it here, don’t you?”
Jackie looked at him, surprised.
“Huh?”
“I could tell from the look in your eyes.”
“What look?”
“That longing look.” To lighten the mood, in his typical sarcastic way, he added. “I can’t believe that you actually miss it here. The illness must have addled your mind, it gets so hectic here at times, I thought anyone would be real glad to get away from here!”
Jackie laughed.
“Well, it seems like you have said more than I have from the moment you saw me, which is unusual since I’m supposed to be the more talkative one, remember?”
“I have still not handed it in yet, you know.”
“What’s still not handed in yet?”
“Your resignation letter.” That took her completely off track. “What did you say?”
“Remember when you handed in your resignation letter to me, I said that I will keep it and just take it that you are on leave? Well, the letter’s still with me, and my offer’s still valid. When you feel that you are able, I will welcome you back here.”
“Are you sure, Henry?”
“I know I’m a joker, but you should know that I never joke about matters regarding the hospital.”
“Yeah, but...”
“No buts about it. Just think about it and let me know your decision.”
“I will. Thanks, Henry.”
“What are friends for? Oh, here comes your Prince Charming. I guess it’s the signal for me to go.”
“Why are you running off the moment you see me, Henry? Did something wrong, and feeling too guilty to face me?”
Paul drawled as he came up to them.
“Like real, as if I will ever let anything scare me off.”
Henry scoffed.
“Stop it, you guys, you are still in the hospital.” Jackie grinned, placing a hand on Paul’s arm. “So, are you ready to go? I thought that we can go off together.”
“You done with whatever you came here to do?”
Paul asked, a look of innocence on his face.
That caused a laugh out of Jackie.
“Yes, I’m done, sir. Can we go now?”
“Where do you want to go?”
“I don’t know, any suggestion?”
“How about After Five?” Henry cut in. “I’m meeting Annie there after work, if you will wait for a minute for me to settle some details, I will go with you. I need a lift anyway.”
Paul looked at Jackie who gave him a shrug in return.
“Alright, we will wait, hurry, or else we will leave without you.”
“Yeah, yeah, nag, nag, nag.”
Henry complained, dodging the hand coming towards him, as he scampered off.
“That guy will never change.” Paul said, leading Jackie towards a roll of seats. “So, what were you guys chatting so enthusiastically about when I came?”
“Henry asked me if I would like to return to work in A & E.”
“Really? That’s good news, so what did you say?”
“I will think about it, but it seems more appealing by the minute, I’ve really missed it here. And, you know how I can’t stand to do nothing, right?”
“Yep, and I will support you in whatever decision you make.”
“Thank you.”
“Why so polite all of a sudden?”
“Nothing, I’m just so touched, by you and all my friends.”
Paul reached out a hand to hold Jackie’s tightly.
“Just know that all of us will be here for you, no matter what happens.”
“I know.”
Jackie smiled, giving his hand a squeeze before standing up again.
“Here he comes. Let’s go.”
Henry came to a stop before them, pulling on his jacket.
“Ok, I’m done, let’s go. The others said that they might join us later.”
Hand in hand, the couple walked out of the hospital with their close friend, amidst sounds of laughter and bantering.
And, somewhere, in a corner, someone was watching this cozy scene, jealousy nearly eating her up alive, jealousy that she could not get what she wanted, and that she would never have hopes of finding such good friends. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-3-26 01:55 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

<font color=" />
The four of them were chatting amiably and in the course of eating dessert when they were startled by a shout, and the sudden appearance of more of their friends.
“And, here we thought that you were not coming and that we could finally have some time in peace.”
Henry joked, as he turned around to see Joe, Helen, Gilbert, Tracy and Anson heading towards their table.
“And I thought you must be missing me very much by now.”
Gilbert retorted.
“Here, pull up a chair.” Jackie suggested. “Want anything to eat?”
“No, we are fine, we just had something, just a drink will do.”
Helen replied.
“Sure.”
Jackie answered as she signaled to a passing waiter to take the orders of the newcomers. They had just finished their ordering when they were joined by another friend.
“Wow, what kind of friends are you? Coming here and not even asking me along.”
“We thought that it will be enough for you just to have the company of Judy.” Joe teased, looking behind Peter. “So, where’s she?”
“She’s attending her class. I will be fetching her later.”
“And, that’s why you decide to find us, right? What kind of a friend are you?”
Joe asked, shooting the same words back to Peter.
“The adorable kind, one that everyone will be glad to have.”
Peter shot back, earning a round of laughter from everyone.
Finally, everyone was settled down, and the original foursome resumed eating while the others took a sip now and then from their glasses. Time flew by with all the laughter and joking, and before long, it was declared time to go.
“Oh, I nearly forgot. I’m spending the night over at Henry’s, Jackie. You can ask Paul over, and the two of you can have the whole apartment to yourselves, to do whatever you want.”
Annie grinned, unable to resist adding in the last comment.
“Annie!” Jackie nudged her, before looking at Paul. “So, what do you think? You wanna come over?”
“You want me to?”
Paul asked, smiling, waiting for the outburst. Sure enough, it came a second later.
“What kind of a question is that to ask a girl, Dr. Cheng? It’s fine with me if you don’t want to come, I’m not afraid of the dark.”
On the other side of the table, a lady was smiling, sure that there would be a fight this time, and that there would not be any sleepovers, and, perhaps, just perhaps, there would be a break up. However, even with the amount of time that she had spent with the group, she did not realize that this was just the usual way of communication for them and that her hopes would soon be dashed.
Paul laughed.
“Did I say you were? I was just being polite, if you don’t appreciate it... Oh well....”
“You still have not given me an answer, are you coming or not?”
Jackie asked impatiently.
“Of course, I’m coming. How could I miss this chance?” Paul grinned. “But, I will need to stop by my apartment to get a change of clothes. That way, I can go straight to the hospital from your house tomorrow.”
“Well then, that’s settled. Took you guys long enough.” Annie grumbled. “Let’s go!”
Biding their farewells, the group parted as each went to each’s respective destination.

“Hey, Annie, don’t you need to get a change of clothes or something from our apartment too?”
“No, I don’t. I have some clothes here.”
“You have?”
“Yep, she does.” Gilbert answered, having overheard their conversation, as he walked to join them on the couch. “This is not the first time that sis is spending the night here.”
“Oh, Annie...”
Jackie teased, shaking a finger at her friend.
“What, what? I just didn’t want to be alone in the apartment when you were in a coma.”
“Excuses, excuses.”
Gilbert drawled.
“Don’t you have anything better to do than eavesdropping on a girl’s conversation?”
Annie asked him.
“Nope, I don’t, and it’s fun to hear what you gals are talking about.”
“Oh, get out of here, Gilbert!”
Annie laughed, throwing a cushion at him.
Gilbert jumped off the couch in time to dodge the cushion, and nearly bumped into Paul, who was just coming to a stop beside the couch.
“What do we have here? You are still playing kids’ games at your age?”
“It’s not my fault. I can’t be bothered with you guys, I’m going to bed.”
Gilbert sulked.
“What’s up with him?” Paul asked, looking after the disappearing Gilbert, before turning his attention back to Jackie. “We’d better get going as well. It’s getting late.”
“I thought you would never be ready.” Jackie jumped up. “Let’s go. See you tomorrow, Annie.”
“Goodnight.”
Annie replied, seeing them to the door.
Paul laughed.

She unlocked the door, and led the way in.
“Well, you know your way around.”
“Sure, I do. Don’t bother about me.”
Jackie was reading a book on the couch when she was finally joined by a pajamas clad Paul.
“Aren’t you going to bed yet?”
“Yep, I’m going soon. You can turn in first.”
She waved a hand negligently at Paul, still intent upon her book. Paul stared at her, waiting by her side for a moment, but when there was no further response from her, he reached out to remove the book from her hands.
“Hey!”
“It’s time for bed, my dear princess. You can continue reading this tomorrow.”
Paul said, before scooping Jackie up into his arms. Jackie, who was totally unprepared for this, let out a squeal.
“What are you doing?”
“Bringing you to bed.”
Came the reply, as Paul carried her into her bedroom.
“Are you sleeping in here too?”
Jackie asked innocently.
“Of course, where else do you think I’m sleeping?”
“Oh, I thought you would be sleeping in the living room or something. You can take Annie’s room, if you like.”
Jackie teased, a look of seriousness on her face.
"Oh, so you don’t want me sleeping here, do you?”
Paul asked, right before dropping Jackie onto her bed, and falling on top of her. Knowing her weakness, he began tickling her.
“Ok, ok, I give up! You can sleep in here.”
“That’s better.”
Paul grinned, before turning serious, the playfulness from a moment ago disappearing. Suddenly, Jackie burst out laughing.
“What?”
Paul looked at her puzzled.
“Nothing, I was just thinking. This is really a role reversal, you know. I can still remember a time more than a year ago when I had tried to take the initiative in holding your hand. Yet, we didn’t even manage to hold hands that one time. This is a vast improvement from that time, you are improving, Paul.”
Jackie grinned, hooking her hands behind Paul’s neck.
“It is, isn’t it? Well, two years is a long time, I’ve learnt.”
Paul grinned, looking fondly at the lady before her.
The moment turned intimate as both gazed deeply into each other’s eyes. Slowly, he leaned down to press a kiss onto Jackie’s lips. The kiss gradually deepened. Wrapped in each other’s arms, the couple was lost to the world, as they became lost in their passion. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-4-26 11:44 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Jackie and Annie’s Apartment
The Next Morning
8.23am <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
The smell of frying bacon roused Paul from a sound sleep. It was the first real sleep that he had in ages, not considering those that he had taken with Jackie in the hospital.
Stretching, he looked around the bedroom to find Jackie gone. Smiling, he walked out of the room in search of her, sure that he knew where she was. True enough, he found her humming and frying bacon in the kitchen. Coming up behind her, he slipped his arms around her waist, nuzzling her neck.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning yourself. Did you have a good sleep?”
Jackie asked, before turning to place a kiss on his cheek.
“Of course, what do you think, when I had such wonderful company in bed?”
That made her laugh.
“Well, if you don’t want to be late for work, you’d better go and get ready. Breakfast will be ready in a minute.”
“You don’t have to do this, you know?”
“Do what?”
“Make breakfast for me. I can just take something on my way to work.”
“It’s fine with me, and I want to.”
“Have I ever told you how much I love you?”
“Nope, not this morning, I don’t think so.”
“I love you.”
“And, I love you back. But, even that’s not going to help you if you are late for work.”
“Yes, madam!”
Paul grinned, snatching a kiss before stepping out of the way to avoid a swat on the behind. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-4-26 11:45 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
That Night
7.48pm <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Oh wow, I can’t believe that I’m home early for once.”
Annie told Jackie as she unlocked the door to their apartment.
“It’s good to stay home for once, you know. And, the two of us haven’t had a meal together at home for ages. This is a good chance for us to sit down and eat in peace, and really get caught up on news.”
“Yeah, yeah, you are forever the nosey person.”
That earned her a poke on the shoulder blade.
“Hey, what do you mean by that?”
“Nothing, I’m innocent.”
The two ladies laughed as they stepped into their apartment, nearly stepping onto the piece of paper on the floor that was just inside the doorway.
“What’s this?” Jackie asked curiously, bending over to pick it up. The words found on the paper only made her all the more curious. “Hey, big lawyer, come take a look at this, will ya?”
“I will not give up so easily.” Frowning, Annie read out loud from the piece of paper in Jackie’s hands. “What is this?”
“I don’t know, I came home at the same time as you did, and I just picked this up from the floor. What do you think it means?”
“I have no idea. It’s not addressed to anybody, guess it’s probably a prank. I’ve seen a few of my colleagues getting such notes too, during their cases, and they usually turn out to be harmless.”
“If you say so, big lawyer.”
“Well, we’d better be on our guard, just in case, alright?”
“Will do. So, what do you say? Pasta for dinner?”
“Oh yes, I miss your pasta.”
Annie licked her lips.
Unconsciously, Jackie slipped the piece of paper onto the counter as she went to prepare dinner while Annie went to change out of her work clothes, the both of them putting the note from their minds, having decided that it was most probably just a prank, played by one of their neighbours’ kids.
Before long, the two friends were chatting amiably over dinner, having totally dismissed the note from their minds.作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-4-26 11:45 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Annie and Jackie’s Apartment
A Week Later

<font color=" />
Jackie sat on the couch, staring at the slip of paper in her hands solemnly. She had just opened the letterbox, and this was the first thing that she noticed. She wanted to wait for Annie to return home before deciding what to do next.
The door creaked open.
“Wow, someone is home early, not out with your fiancé?” Annie teased, before noticing the unusually quiet and serious looking Jackie. “Jackie, what’s wrong? Had a fight with Paul?” She asked, sitting down beside her friend.
“Nope, take a look at this.” Jackie held the note out to her friend. “I just received this in the letterbox.”
Taking the note from Jackie, Annie read it out loud again, repeating her action of a week ago.
“You have not won yet! Just wait and see!”
Jackie leaned forward, placing a hand beneath her chin, her elbow supported on her knee.
“What do you make of this? Do you still think this is a prank?”
“I’m not so sure, maybe it is, maybe it’s not. It’s not addressed to anyone, so how can we be sure it’s meant for us? If it’s really a threat, I’m sure there will be a name. Why would the person sending this not indicate who it is for?”
“You may be right. But, I don’t think it’s for me. After all, I’ve just woken up from a coma, and since I’m so adorable, why would anyone threaten me? I would guess that it’s more likely for you. Have you offended anyone at work recently?”
“Oh, stop flattering yourself! I would say you are more nosey than adorable.” Annie grinned, for the moment able to ignore the note. Then, she turned serious again. “That’s what I’m worried about. In my line of work, whether it’s unconsciously or consciously, I will no doubt make some enemies, and this could be the work of one of them.”
“So, you think we should tell the guys?”
Annie sighed, leaning forward as well.
“I don’t know, although I know they should be told of this, I just don’t want to alarm anyone, after all, we are not so sure what this is all about yet. I’m thinking of waiting to see if there’s gonna be another note.”
“Whatever, it’s your call. Let’s just be more careful from now on, alright?”
“Ok.” Annie placed an arm around her friend. “I’m so sorry to have dragged you into this as well, Jackie. Listen, if you think it’s too dangerous, why don’t you, for the time being, stay in Paul’s apartment?”
“If I didn’t know better, I would kill you for that. You are my buddy, and you should know that I would stick with you, be it better or worse.”
She hugged Jackie.
“Of course you are my buddy too. I knew I could count on you. It was just a suggestion, don’t get your hackles up. Come on, it’s getting late, time to go to bed. I still have to work tomorrow, in case you have forgotten.”
The word ‘work’ reminded Jackie of her talk with Henry.
“Oh yes, in the midst of all the excitement...”
“Excitement?”
Annie asked wryly.
”Umm, maybe not excitement, but I can’t believe I’ve not told you this earlier, unless Henry had told you about it already.”
“Told me what? You are stalling, Jackie.”
“Well, he has offered me a job back at A & E.”
“Why, that’s great! So, when do you start work?”
“Umm.... I have not exactly agreed yet.”
“What do you mean you have not agreed yet? I thought it’s been your dream to return to A & E?”
“Yes, it is, but...”
Annie put her hand on Jackie’s shoulder.
“But, you are scared, aren’t you?”
Jackie nodded.
“I’ve not admitted this to anyone yet, but I’m scared, more so than worried. What if I’ve lost my touch, what if I can’t be a doctor anymore?”
“Jackie, I never knew anyone who loves being a doctor as much as you, the rest of the gang not included. But, I know how much your work means to you, and how cut out for it you are. I won’t pressurize you into agreeing into anything yet, but just think about all that it means to you. What does Paul say about this?”
“He says that he will go with anything I decide. He’s leaving the decision to me.”
“And, we all know you will make the right one.”
Annie said, patting her shoulder, before getting off the couch to return to her room, leaving Jackie mulling over her words. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-4-26 11:47 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Paul’s Apartment

<font color=" />
“I have decided.”
“Decided what?”
Paul looked at Jackie, lost. The couple was cuddled together on Paul’s bed. By now, their apartments were totally opened to each other, it was as if each had a second home in each other’s apartments.
“I’m going back to work at A & E.”
Paul looked at her.
“Are you sure? Not that I’m pressurizing you or anything.”
“Yes, I’m very sure. Annie is right. Being a doctor is my niche, I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed it till that day when I went to the hospital to go to your office.”
“Well, if you’ve decided...”
“Are you not pleased about it?”
“Like I said earlier, I don’t want to force you to do something that you don’t want to do, but if you really want to know, I’m glad you decided to return to work at A & E. You are a terrific doctor, and I’m sure you will be just fine. I’m thrilled too that I can get to see you at the hospital all the time now.”
Jackie leaned her chin on his chest.
“Well, I’m glad you approve, Dr. Ching. Oh, by the way, don’t you think you are getting too mushy?”
“Am I?” Paul laughed. “Well, I don’t care, I don’t mind the whole world knowing that I love Jackie Tong.” He strained up to kiss her. “I love you, Mrs. Ching.”
“Who’s Mrs. Ching? We are not even married yet.”
“Then what’s that I see on your ring finger?”
“Oh that, just a diamond, I guess.”
“Jackieee.....”
She laughed.
“Alright, alright. I love you too, Dr. Ching. Is that good enough for you?”
“A bit of action to prove that point might be even better.”
“Aren’t you ever satiated?”
“Not when I’m with you.”
“I can’t believe I created a monster.”
Jackie groaned before allowing herself to be seduced by Paul’s kisses. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-4-26 11:48 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
The next morning, she got up early and went to work with Paul. He dropped her off outside Henry’s office before heading off to his own. He squeezed her hand. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Good luck, I know you can do it.”
“I just wish I have as much confidence in myself as you seem to have in me.”
Jackie muttered, staring at Henry’s office door apprehensively.
“Where’s the courageous Jackie that I know? The one who’s not afraid of anything?”
“Well, she seems to have disappeared at this moment.”
Paul knocked at the office door, earning a glare from Jackie. When they heard the expected ‘enter’, he nudged her forward.
“It will be fine, trust me. After all, this is what you are cut out to do. I will see you at lunch, alright?”
He kissed her on the cheek and hurried away, not waiting for a response from his fiancée.
Taking a deep breath and summoning up her courage, Jackie opened the door, and stepped into a world that she had reluctantly left behind nearly two years ago.
“Hi, Henry.”
Henry looked up from the papers on his desk, surprised. He had not expected Jackie to come to see him this soon. Hoping this was what it meant, he gestured for her to take a seat.
“So, what brought our Dr. Tong here today?”
“Well... I..... I decided to take you up on your offer. I want to come back to work at A & E again.”
A look of approval and pleasure flashed across Henry’s face.
“You are sure about this?”
Jackie nodded.
“Being a doctor means a lot to me, and I realize that I’m not ready to give it up yet.”
“Wow, such seriousness from Dr. Tong.” Henry teased, before becoming all serious again. He stood up. “Then, I’m glad to welcome you back. Welcome back, Dr. Tong, I’m sure you will still find this place as horrible as ever.”
Jackie laughed.
“You must think I’m crazy to have missed all these, huh?”
“What do you think? You wanna loiter around for a while to get a hang of things? Can you start work tomorrow?”
“I believe someone has missed me here as well, wanting me to start work so soon. Yes, I will be glad to stay for a while, I’m meeting Paul for lunch anyway, come and join us, I’ve asked Annie along too, and yep, I can start work tomorrow.”
Henry grinned.
“I treat you and Joe as my disciples, you two have always been the best around here, of course, I miss you. With you around, at least I can loaf a little.”
“Huh, you... For a while there, I thought we were going to have a hallmark moment.”
“Never! You will never get that from me.” He retorted. “Come on, what are you waiting for? Let’s go.”
He opened his door and led the way to A & E, where he announced to the staff that Jackie would be joining the crew officially the next day.
“So, you’ve finally made up your mind. I’d wonder how long you would take, finally there’s someone to take over the load.”
Joe crowed.
“Can’t you guys stop saying that? Don’t you think you guys should be welcoming me back instead of making all those remarks?”
Helen laughed.
“Ignore them, you know how they are. Welcome back, Dr. Tang, it’s going to be great seeing you around the hospital again.”
“Thank you, Helen.” Jackie looked at Henry and Joe triumphantly. “At least someone appreciates me here.”
Soon, everyone had come to welcome the latest addition to the A & E crew, including Anson and Tracy.
But someone was not entirely happy with this arrangement. She just viewed this as more competition in future. Jackie and Annie’s Apartment
Two Weeks Later

<font color=" />
Two weeks passed without mishaps, and the two ladies had finally put the matter of the threatening notes behind them, though they still kept the notes in case they were ever needed for evidence.
“Hey, Jackie, have you ordered the pizzas yet?” Annie called from the room.
“Yep, I had.” Jackie called back from the kitchen. She finished preparing the salad and put the dish on the table, only to be joined by Annie, who snuck a piece of cucumber into her mouth.
Jackie slapped at her hand.
“Hands off, at this rate, all the veggies will be gone by the time the guys get here.”
“That will still take some time yet, and I’m hungry.” Annie complained on her way to the couch as Jackie joined her. “So, how is it like, to be back at work after such a long break?”
“It was weird at first, but everything’s like it was. It’s great to be working with everyone again, though Tracy seemed a bit resistant.”
“Tracy?”
“Yep, somehow, I get the feeling that she doesn’t like me lot.”
“Why would you think so? You two have only been in much contact these past two weeks.”
“It’s just a feeling that I have. I think it’s partly because of Paul too.”
“Paul?”
“Yep, I believe that she’s interested in Paul.”
“Really?”
“Yep, so do you know if they were dating or anything like that while I was in a coma?”
“Paul and Tracy? Oh come on, Jackie, you should know that Paul have better taste than that.” Jackie laughed.
“Oh, Annie, you are so bad! But, thanks for trying to cheer me up. Well, you’ve yet to answer my question...”
“Nope, I don’t think so, if they were, I’m sure Henry would have told me, but nobody told me anything, so I guess not. You should have more confidence in Paul than that, Jackie.”
“I know, it was just a thought.” She noticed Annie rubbing her nape. “It’s been a long two weeks, huh?”
“Yep, the absolute worst. I had such a hard time keeping everything from Henry.”
“Yeah, I know, me too. I keep finding myself about to blurt out the truth to Paul. Do you think they discovered anything?”
“Nope, I don’t think so. Anyway, we have not received any more notes from that last one, I guess it’s all finally behind us now. If I ever know who the note sending culprit is, I will make sure he rue the day he decided to cross Annie Jiang.”
Jackie grinned.
“I really pity the guy then. So...” Before Jackie could finish her sentence, the doorbell rang. “Let me get that!” She scrambled up from her seat and hurried to the door. After paying the deliveryman, she carried the pizza over to the dining table. “Pizza’s here.”
“I will get the plates.”
Annie said, and got off the couch.
The both of them were just walking towards the dining table with plates and glasses in their hands when there was a sudden loud explosion, the force of which caused them to be thrown backwards. Annie landed with a loud thud, banging her head against the counter, while Jackie fell just beside her, bits of glasses covering her, wounds that were already starting to bleed appearing on her hands. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-6-5 02:57 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
In The Hospital

<font color=" />
Paul looked around his room one final time, before exiting it and locking the door. He walked to the A & E department where he had agreed to meet Henry so that they could go to the girls’ apartment together.
“Hey, Henry, are you done? Any later, and we will be cooked ourselves!”
Henry looked up surprised, unaware that it was rather late already.
“Give me a couple more minutes, and I’ll be done.”
Paul nodded. He was just walking away to get a drink when a hand stopped him.
“Paul!” He looked up to see Tracy smiling sweetly at him. “It’s been so long since we’ve had a talk alone. What have you been up to?”
“Well, I’ve been spending most of my time with Jackie. We gotta start our wedding preparations already, ya know.”
The smile on Tracy’s face dimmed.
“Tracy?”
She jerked back to reality.
"Huh?”
“Nothing, you just look kinda lost for a while there.”
“Oh, I was just thinking of something. So, how about we get a drink one of these days?”
“Sure, I will ask Jackie along and you can get to know each other better.”
Before Tracy could offer any protest to that, Henry came up to them.
“Ok, I’m ready, let’s go. We don’t wanna be later than we already are, do we?”
“Hmm... I seem to recall that I’m not the one causing us to be late.”
“Whatever, let’s go!”
Sighing with exasperation, Paul followed Henry out of the hospital. However, before they had even gone past the front desk, they were halted.
“Dr. Lai, there are a couple of patients coming in. Seems like they were involved in a bomb accident or something.”
Henry looked at Paul apologetic.
“It’s ok, go ahead, I will just wait, and see if I can help in any way.”
Nodding, Henry returned to the curtain area to start preparations for the new arrivals.
Before long, two gurneys were pushed into the hospital, and into the area where Henry and his crew were waiting.
“On my count, 1, 2 .....”
Henry’s voice trailed off as he looked down on the patient’s face and recognized it as Jackie’s.
Hurriedly, he went to the other gurney, and was shocked to find that Annie occupied it.
“Annie!” He turned to the nurse by his side, and demanded that she ask Paul to come in at once. Then, he returned his attention to his beloved, gently slapping the face. “Annie, Annie, wake up, can you hear me? It’s Henry, wake up! What happened?”
Just then, Paul entered the area, and heard him calling for Annie. Fearing for the worst, he approached the other gurney, and true to his fears, he saw Jackie lying there unconscious. Gently, he repeated Henry’s actions, but this time, it was on his own beloved.
“Jackie! Oh God, what happened? Why is this happening again? Jackie, wake up, can you hear me? It’s Paul, Jackie!”
It was with relief when he saw Jackie’s eyelashes flutter, before her eyes opened slowly.
“Annie!”
Suddenly, panic entered those huge dark eyes, as Jackie tried to sit up. Paul hastened to press her back onto the gurney.
“Jackie, this is Paul, can you hear me?”
“Paul?”
“Yep, this is Paul. You and Annie have both been sent to A & E. Lie still for a moment and let me give you a check up, alright?”
He nodded at the nurse beside him, who in turn rambled off a string of vitals.
“I’m fine, Paul, stop worrying. It’s only my hands that hurt, the rest of me feels fine.”
It was upon those words that Paul noticed that Jackie’s hands were covered with blood. Worriedly, he took them gently, and proceeded to clean them, only to be relieved when, after all the gore was gone, only a few small wounds were seen.
“I will get a nurse to dress the wounds for you, ok?”
Jackie nodded.
“Where’s Annie? How is she? I think she’s hurt worse than me, I think she knocked her head or something, I’m not very sure.”
“She’s just beside you, I will go and check on her right now, alright? You just rest here and let the nurse dress your wounds.”
Paul patted Jackie reassuringly before walking to Annie.
“Henry, how is she?”
“She’s just coming round.”
Both of them looked down to see Annie slowly opening her eyes. The vitals announced by a nurse indicated that she was not in any danger.
“Jackie!”
Concern for her friend had her trying to sit up.
“Annie, Jackie is fine, I want you to lie down, and let me do a checkup for you, ok?”
“Henry?”
“Yep, it’s me, surprised to see me so soon?”
Henry teased, trying to lighten the mood.
“My head hurts.”
Annie moaned, in a rare show of weakness, totally comfortable to put her life in this man’s hands.
Gently, Henry probed Annie’s head, only to find a small lump behind an ear.
“I think she’d better go for a CT scan,” Henry told Paul, “What do you think?”
He moved aside to allow Paul to check Annie’s head.
“I agree, it’s hard to tell with head injuries.”
“And, I’m gonna keep them both here overnight for observations.” Henry added grimly, “And, while they are here, we can ask them what exactly happened.”
“That’s for sure.”
Relieved that both ladies apparently appeared alright, Paul turned back to Jackie.
“Both of you appear to be fine, but we are still going to keep you overnight for observations, ok?”
Jackie smiled that mischievous smile of hers.
“When did you transfer to A & E without my being aware of it?”
“I can’t believe you can still joke at a time like this.”
She reached out to take hold of his hand, much to the distaste of an observer, who had been burning with jealousy ever since Jackie was sent in, and the concern that Paul poured over her.
“Paul, I’m fine, don’t worry, my hands are feeling much better now.”
As if to prove her point, she flashed both hands before Paul’s eyes.
“They are both heavily bandaged, do you call that fine?”
The worry of a moment before had turned into anger, anger towards himself that he had not been there to protect her when the accident happened. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-6-5 02:59 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Determined to calm him down, Jackie reached out to grab one of Paul’s hands once again, grimacing slightly when the action aggravated her wounds. No matter how slight it was, that grimace still did not escape Paul’s eyes. Contrite, Paul stoked her face. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Take a rest, I’ll be in your room in a minute.”
“Are you still upset then?”
“No, I’m not. Don’t worry, I will see you in a minute, alright?”
Nodding, Jackie closed her eyes and allowed her gurney to be pushed away. When he saw that she was safely brought away, Paul turned his attention back to Henry and Annie.
“How is she?”
“Doing well too. I’m sending her to a room now.”
“How about letting her share a room with Jackie? I’m sure they would love to.”
“That’s a good idea.” Henry agreed before turning to the nurse by his side and indicating where he wanted Annie to be sent.
Soon, both ladies were settled comfortably in their room, but before they could even think of talking, both Dr. Lai and Dr. Ching entered their room.
“So, how are our patients doing today?”
“Fine.”
Jackie answered, trying to get off her bed.
Paul hurried to her side.
“What are you doing?”
“What does it look like I’m doing? I’m trying to get off my bed, of course, without hurting my hands.”
“What do you want? I will get it for you, just get back on your bed, alright?”
“I want to see Annie.”
Jackie announced, with a stubborn tilt to her head, as if daring Paul to defy her.
Paul sighed in exasperation, knowing that once she had her mind set, nothing could change it again. Instead of letting Jackie continue struggling to get off her bed, he simply put his arms around her, and lifted her right off.
“What are you doing?”
“What do you think?” Paul threw back at her. “Just trying to make things easier for you.”
Finally understanding his meaning, Jackie smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Thank you.”
“Make way, make way for the lady.”
Paul called as he carried Jackie over to Annie’s bed. Scooting over, Annie created a space on her bed so that Paul could place Jackie down.
“Annie, are you alright?”
Jackie looked at her best friend anxiously.
“Yep, I’m fine, you?”
“I’m fine too. You knocked against the counter pretty heavily, didn’t you? I saw you go down just before I fell.”
“Your hands?”
Annie indicated with her head.
“I was holding the glasses, remember? I guess when I fell, they broke and cut my hands.”
“It looks like we are abundant here, I don’t think they need us here at all.”
Henry noted dryly to Paul.
Grinning, Annie reached out to hold his hand.
“I’m glad that you are here. After all, you save my life, so, you are my knight in shining armor.”
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say I save your life, but if you want me to be your knight in shining armor, who am I to gainsay you?”
“Did anyone ever say that you are very thick skinned?”
Jackie laughed.
“I think we’d better get back to the matter at hand. What exactly happened? We were told that your neighbour heard a loud explosion and went to your apartment to check it out, only to find you both unconscious. It was him who called for the ambulance.”
Paul interjected.
Jackie and Annie looked at each other, uncomfortable, sure that they would be in for a scolding this time.
“Well....”
The former began, only to be cut off by Annie.
“We have been receiving threatening notes.”
That brought both guys out of their nonchalant positions, and burst out simultaneously.
“And, you only saw fit to tell us now?”
“We didn’t want to worry you.”
Jackie muttered.
“Don’t want to worry us? What the hell were you thinking of?”
Paul yelled, for once, losing his cool. Everyone, except Annie who had seen him lose his temper once before when Jackie had just gone into a coma, stared at him shocked.
“Paul, don’t blame Jackie. It was my idea. We didn’t know who the notes were for since they were unaddressed, but we assume they were for me as Jackie had just woken up from her coma and couldn’t have offended anyone while, I, being the lawyer, am sure to have offended some people during my course of work.”
Jackie squeezed Annie’s hand reassuringly.
“We are sorry, we didn’t mean to keep it from you guys, but we’ve received no more notes after two weeks, and so we thought it was just a false alarm. Who would have guessed that the pizza would explode like that.”
Henry, who had been keeping silent all this while, finally voiced out his thoughts. He walked to Annie’s side of the bed, looking at her hard, yet his hand belied his concerns as he caressed her hair.
“I really ought to smack you for this, you know. Do you still treat me as your boyfriend? To think that you gals have been threatened all this while, and I am totally unaware of it.”
“Me too!”
Paul added.
Jackie reached out to grip Paul’s hands tightly.
“Ok, I admit this time, it’s our fault, we shouldn’t have kept something so important from you guys, but we just didn’t want you to worry incessantly. We’ve been very careful ever since we received the first note. I’m sorry, don’t be angry anymore?”
Paul sighed, stroking her cheek gently.
“You know I can't stay angry at you for long.”
“So, what now?”
Annie wondered.
“I believe Zhang Sir is over at your apartment right now checking things out. We informed him just before we came here. I think he’s going to come over later to ask you gals some questions.”
Before anyone could say anything more, there came a knock at the door. At the ‘enter’, it opened to admit the rest of their friends.
“Hey, Annie, Jackie, are you gals alright? What happened? I got such a shock when I was informed that you were sent to A & E unconscious.”
Gilbert burst out, as he hurried into the room, to his sister’s side.
“I’m fine, and so is Jackie.”
Annie reassured him.
“Don’t ever scare us like that again.” Joe commented. “We were almost at a loss on what to do, luckily Henry saved the day.”
“Ahh.. My knight in shining armor.”
Annie teased.
“If you really think that, then I think that blow must have really injured your head.”
Joe joked, his comment making everyone in the room laugh. 作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2005-6-5 03:01 AM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集
Time passed quickly for everyone in the room as they bantered in their usual manner, when there came a knock at the door again, this time admitting Peter and a colleague. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[img] />

<font color=" />
“Wow, you are all here! So, how do you ladies feel?”
Peter asked, concern written all over his face.
“We are fine, thank you.” Jackie replied for the both of them. “So, did you just come from our apartment?”
“Um hmm.. You are lucky you are fine, sadly, your apartment isn’t that lucky. You should have seen the mess your living room is in, if you were any nearer to the pizza box, I might be looking at you in the morgue instead of here.”
All eyes turned to glare at him, before Joe nudged him hard.
“Why do you keep putting your foot in your mouth?”
“What, what did I say?” Peter asked innocently, looking round the room. It was then he noticed the murderous expressions on both Paul’s and Henry’s faces. “Oops.”
“And, we’ve just spent so much time pacifying them.”
Annie sighed in exasperation.
“I was only kidding. Couldn’t you tell?” Peter grinned sheepishly. “It’s not as bad as you guys think, it was only a homemade bomb, so the effect isn’t that powerful. Still, for a homemade bomb, it was pretty good, and it was a time detonated bomb too.”
From his expression and tone, everyone could tell that the police detective was impressed by the work of whoever it was that planted the bomb in the pizza box.
Aren’t you supposed to be on our side? Why are you praising the crazy fellow who made the bomb? Sometimes, I really wonder if we are really your friends.”
Joe looked at him in mock puzzlement.
“I just can’t be bothered to talk to you.” Peter told him. He then looked at the two ladies. “If you two ladies feel up to it, I would like to take a statement.”
“Sure, ask away.”
Annie replied calmly. Henry looked at her in admiration, sometimes, Annie’s strength really surprised him.
“I guess we’d better get going then.” Joe said. “Paul, Henry, you guys coming?”
The two doctors looked at their respective halves questioningly.
“Go, go, we’ll be fine. Moreover, we have two detectives here to protect us, no harm can come to us here. Right, Annie?”
Jackie asked.
“Right. Go do whatever it is that you have to do. We’ll be alright.”
Nodding, Henry and Paul leaned down to kiss their foreheads before following the others out of the room.
“Aww... isn’t that sweet?”
“Is that supposed to be part of the statement?”
Jackie teased him.
“What, what? Oh, no, no.”
“Don’t be so worried. She’s just teasing you. So, what do you want to know?”
Annie asked as she settled herself more comfortably beside Jackie.
The atmosphere in the room grew serious as the two detectives proceeded with their questioning. It was exhausting for the two ladies, but fortunately, it was over before long.
“We’ll go back to your apartment to get the notes and look into the matter right away. By the way, we've questioned the pizza company before we came here, and we were told that they did not deliver any pizza over to your apartment, your pizza was not even ready yet."
"Which means that whoever is after you knows your every move."
His colleague added.
"So, in the mean time, be very careful, will you?”
“Thanks, we’ll do that.”
“Will you be alright alone in here?”
“We are not exactly alone, are we?” Annie retorted. “I have Jackie for company and she has me for hers. But, thanks for your concern.”
“Alright then, we will get going. We will let you know once we found out anything.”
The two ladies nodded, as they watched them leave. Soon, it was just the two of them left alone in the room.
“So, Jackie, do you ever plan on returning to your own bed?”
“So fast chasing me away already?”
“No, of course not, you should know that.”
“Oh well, I know when I’ve outstayed my welcome.”
“Jaackieee.....”
Annie growled.
The former laughed.
“I get it, I get it, I’m going. Really!”
“Say it one more time, don’t forget you’re still in my territory.”
Hurriedly, Jackie hopped off the bed before Annie could hit her, bumping her hands in the process.
“Ouch!”
“Jackie, are you alright?”
Annie asked anxiously.
“Yep, I’m fine, I just knocked my hands on the bed rail for a while there.”
“You sure?”
“Yep, I’m sure. Since when have you become so naggy?”
“If you don’t appreciate my concern.....”
“I do, I really do. I was just kidding.”
Jackie protested, before leaning over to give Annie a kiss on the forehead.
“Thank you. Take a rest, alright?”
Annie nodded.
“You too.”
And so, when both Paul and Henry entered the room again, it was to return to a scene where both ladies were sleeping soundly.
“I guess they needed the rest.”
Paul exclaimed, with his arms crossed, and looking down at Jackie who was sleeping peacefully.
“They are wonders, aren’t they? Sleeping so soundly after the scare they got this afternoon.”
Henry smiled.
“I’m not so sure I would be able to sleep as well as them, not knowing who is after them.”
“Yeah, I know. Me too.”
“How about getting Gilbert to check on them while we go and clear up their apartment. I don’t think they want to go back to a ruined home.”
“I agree. They should be pretty safe here.”
With one last look at the ladies, the two men stepped out of the room in search of Gilbert.
“I’m thinking of having them stay at our apartment for the time being.”
“I’m thinking of the same thing too. Do you think they will agree? Especially Annie? You are her boyfriend, I’m sure you know how stubborn she can be sometimes.”
“Not to mention Jackie too.”
“We will just take things one day at a time, huh? Just have to be more on our guard.”
Finally, they managed to locate Gilbert and tell him about their plans before heading off to the ladies’ apartment.
“Why do you keep putting your foot in your mouth?”
“What, what did I say?” Peter asked innocently, looking round the
room. It was then he noticed the murderous expressions on both Paul’s and
Henry’s faces. “Oops.”
we,for our part, admitting the fact that no feat of inlelligence and character is so exacting as that required of two people who desire to live permanently together on a basis of amity, are obsessed by the problem of how to render the basic facts of cohabitation simpler and more reasonable,in order that unhappy marriage may less frequently result.作者: flms123 时间: 2006-1-14 08:46 PM 标题: 回复: 【转帖】一個英文版的妙手仁心續集

On The Way To Paul’s Apartment
The Next Day
8.05pm
“I don’t understand why we have to wait for you guys to fetch us home when we could do so perfectly fine ourselves.” Jackie grumbled. “Now, we gotta pay for one more day of hospitalization.”
Paul looked at her in exasperation.
“Just to ease our minds, alright?”
“Paul’s right.” Henry called from behind them, in the back seat. He squeezed Annie’s hand, smiling at her. “We just want to play safe.”
“Hey, this is not the route to our apartment.”
Annie suddenly sat up straight.
“We are having you ladies over at our apartment for these few days, alright?”
“To play safe again?”
Jackie asked.
Paul nodded.
“Ok, but can we stop over at our apartment first, we want to get some stuff.”
“Sure, your wish is my command.”
Paul grinned, before changing route to the ladies’ apartment.
“Wow, did you guys clean this place up? It’s sparkling clean!”
Jackie burst out, upon entering the apartment.
“Yep, we did that when you were asleep.”
Paul acknowledged.
Annie looked at Henry surprised.
“You came too?”
He nodded sheepishly.
She gave him a hug.
“That’s so sweet of you. I never figure you for that kind of guy.”
Henry returned the hug before speaking.
“What kind of guy?”
“A very sweet guy.”
“Annie, leave that for later, will ya?” Jackie teased. “Don’t forget what we are here for.”
“Alright, alright, I’m coming.”
Annie called back.
Turning, she walked quickly to her room, while Jackie went to hers. It did not take them long to pack whatever they needed, and leave the apartment.
Paul’s Apartment
45 Minutes Later
Paul opened the door and led the way into his apartment.
“Make yourselves at home.”
“We will, it’s not as if it’s our first time here.”
Jackie rolled her eyes.
“Hey, you gals are here!”
Gilbert exclaimed as he came out of his room. He went to the kitchen to pour a couple of drinks for them, before heading to the living room.
“Thanks.”
Both ladies replied, taking the drinks and settling themselves on either side of him on the couch. He looked from one to the other, before asking.
“So, how do you feel? Fully recovered already?”
“We are fine, it’s just that these two guys here are over anxious.”
Annie told him.
“It’s better to be safe than sorry,”
Henry retorted.
Jackie stretched her arms, looking around the room and grinning. “Do you know how long it has been since the five of us actually sat down to talk?” She placed an arm around Gilbert. “And, you, Ah Gil, what have you been so busy with lately? If we didn’t have an accident, we might not have the chance to see you at all.”
“Why would you need to see me when you have Paul?” The latter asked, gingerly taking her hand, and peeling it off his shoulder. “Umm.... Don’t you think you should keep your hands to yourself? Someone might get jealous.”
“Who? Oh, you mean Paul?” Jackie laughed teasingly. “Don’t worry, he knows we are like sisters.”
“What about me?”
Annie asked, pointing to herself.
“Oh, you are my favorite sister.”
Jackie hurriedly answered.
That reply had everyone bursting out in laughter. Thus, for the first time in a long while, the five close friends chatted till the wee hours of the night.
“I can’t take it anymore, my eyes are closing on me. I’m going to wash up and go straight to bed. Goodnight”
Jackie finally announced and bounded off, leaving Paul looking after her helplessly.
“So, where am I sleeping tonight?”
Annie asked.
“Where else? With me, of course.”
“I thought I was going to share a room with Jackie?”
Annie teased.
“When did I say that?” Henry retorted, before turning to return to his room, carrying Annie’s bag along with him. “If you want your things, you’d better come with me.”
“Threatening me?” Annie followed him. “Threats don’t work on me, you know.”
Paul grinned, watching as the two continued to argue on the way to Henry’s room. He, in turn, picked up Jackie’s bag and entered his own room, leaving Gilbert to return to his.
long time no see. hope you all have a happy valentine作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2006-2-13 01:28 AM
A week passed without any further incidents, nor was there any news forthcoming from the police. The two men remained protective of their loved ones, and though the two ladies were appreciative of everything that was done for them, they soon grew tired of it all, given their independent nature. Thus, they decided that it was time for them to return to their own home.
“Are you sure?”
Henry asked, his chopsticks full of noodles halting midway to his mouth. For that week, the two men had been making every effort to have dinner together with the ladies.
Annie nodded.
“Um hmm... Jackie and I decided that it’s time for us to return home, not that we don’t enjoy it here but still, home’s the best.”
“Right! You guys can come over anytime you want.”
Jackie added, with a look at Paul.
“Why are you looking at me like that? I have not said anything yet. I guess no one can dissuade you ladies once you’ve made up your mind, I know how stubborn you can be.”
“What?”
Jackie demanded, with a mock punch at Paul.
“Nothing, what did I say?”
Paul smiled, an innocent look on his face.
“I will let you off this time. So, I guess that’s settled, huh? Annie and I will return home tomorrow.”
“How about after dinner tomorrow, Henry and I will send you home?”
“Sure, we can wait till then.”
Both ladies agreed.
True to their promise, the two guys sent Annie and Jackie home after dinner together.
Annie opened the door to their apartment, and entered it, followed by Jackie and the two guys.
“Oh wow, home sweet home.”
Jackie exclaimed, flinging her bag onto the couch.
“You mean you’ve never like my home all this while?”
Paul pretended to be angry.
“Of course not,” Jackie hastened to pacify him, wrapping her arms around him from behind. “You are the best and I adore your apartment.”
“That’s better.”
Paul grinned.
“I can’t stand you guys.” Henry gave a mock shudder. “How can you be so mushy?”
“Are you jealous?”
Jackie shot out.
“Why would I be?”
Henry retorted, earning an exasperated look from Annie as she rolled her eyes.
“Ignore him, you know how he’s like. So, are the both of you going home or what?”
“If you want us to stay...”
Henry suggested.
“Well, we will be fine with or without you here. The choice is up to you.”
“Looks like we are not wanted here.”
Henry told Paul.
Paul looked at Jackie who gave him a shrug in return.
“Alright then, we won’t spend the night here tonight, maybe tomorrow. We will bring supper.” On so saying, he gave Jackie a hug and a peck on the lips. “Be careful, lock your door. I will come and pick you up for work tomorrow.”
“Paul, I’ll be fine, and I’ll see you at the hospital. Annie can send me to work.”
By this time, Annie had walked Henry to the door and they were saying their own goodbyes.
“Be careful, will ya?”
“Henry, I’ll still be seeing you tomorrow night. We’ll be fine, don’t worry.”
Henry nodded, leaning down to kiss her gently on the lips.
“Goodnight.” Then in a louder tone, he called to Paul. “Paul, are you ready to go yet?”
“Coming!”
The latter replied, walking to the door.
“Now, lock your door.”
“We will, just go.”
Both ladies replied in exasperation, when both guys refused to budge from the door until it was closed作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2006-2-13 01:29 AM
Jackie’s and Annie’s Apartment
The Next Night
10.58pm
“I wonder what’s taking them so long?”
“Why, are you hungry again?” Annie teased Jackie. “I thought you had a lot for dinner just now.”
“I did not.”
“You did. I saw you. Careful, Jackie, you are putting on weight.”
“All the better to crush you with!”
Came the prompt retort, as without warning, Jackie pounced on Annie, causing them both to topple onto the couch.
It was to this scene that Paul and Henry happened upon when they entered the apartment with the key that they had been given. Grinning, they watched as both ladies struggled on the couch, laughing and screaming all the while.
“Doesn’t look as if their lives are in any danger, don’t you think so?”
Henry asked Paul sarcastically.
Paul laughed.
“They sure are enjoying themselves.”
It was then that the presence of the two men was noticed by their respective halves.
“Oh, you are finally here. I thought we had to call the search team or something, it sure took you long enough.”
Jackie said, getting up from her position on top of Annie.
“Yep, and we have one starving doctor here.”
Annie mentioned, earning a glare from Jackie.
“Didn’t you have any dinner?”
Paul asked, coming to the couch to sit beside Jackie.
“I did, am just hungry again.”
She replied before giving him a kiss.
Supper was over before Annie decided to break the news to the two guys.
“Jackie and I are bunking in together in Jackie’s room tonight. You two can take my room.”
Henry looked at Paul in mock horror.
“I’m not sharing a room with him!”
“As if I want to share one with you.”
Paul pretended offense.
“Well, you two can fight it out, we are going to bed. Thanks for the supper.”
Jackie grinned, quickly giving Paul a kiss on the lips before dashing off to her room, followed by Annie.
He sighed, and looked at Henry.
“Looks like it’s only you and I left.”
“Well, we can go home if you like.”
“Do you want to?”
Henry shook his head.
“I guess that settles it then.”
Dressed for bed half an hour later, the two guys were sitting in the living room watching television when they heard laughter drifting out from Jackie’s room.
Jackie snuggled up to Annie, determined not to let her off.
“So, did you or did you not?”
“Did I what?”
“You know what I’m asking. Did you and Henry, you know....”
“Know what?”
“Do you really want me to spell it out for you?”
“I’m going to get a drink. Do you want one?”
Annie evaded answering the question, as she got out of bed to go to the kitchen.
Unfortunately, a persistent Jackie followed her out of bed, all the way to the kitchen.
“So, tell me.”
“Why do you want to know? Why are you so interested anyway?”
Annie questioned.
“Just curious.”
Paul and Henry looked on fascinated, as both Annie and Jackie had seemingly forgotten about their presence, and were now standing infront of them, teasing and pestering each other, blocking their view of the television.
This time, Jackie was taken by surprise when Annie turned the table on her.
“What about you? You only know to tease me, what about yourself?”
“What about me?”
Jackie blushed, immediately freeing her hands from Annie’s shoulders. But before she could move away, her shoulders were gripped by Annie. Before long, they were pushing at each other.
“Ha! It’s your turn now, so confess! Don’t think you can get away so easily.”
“Confess what?”
Jackie shrugged her shoulders, obviously uncomfortable with the question.
“Did you or did you not?”
“Did what?”
Paul called out from his seat, causing them both to swivel their heads around to stare at him before turning back to look at each other. Suddenly, they burst into laughter.
“Sometimes, I wonder if we know what we are getting ourselves into.”
Henry drawled from his position.
“Sometimes, I agree with you on that too.”
Paul replied.
“Sorry, we forgot that you were here. Did we disturb you?”
Jackie asked, having finally wound down from laughing to giggling.
“Let’s go back to bed before we disturb them anymore.”
Annie grinned, seeing an exasperated look in Henry’s eyes. She leaned down to peck him on the lips before heading back to Jackie’s room.
Soon, the whole apartment was quiet as everyone went to bed, except for Annie’s room, where two people could not get to sleep.
Paul placed his arms behind his head as he stared at the ceiling.
“I can’t believe I’m actually sharing a bed with you.”
“I can’t believe it too. Oh man, are we turning into softies? Or are we just too blinded by love. If anyone ever tells me that I would be sharing a bed with Dr. Ching, I would be laughing my head off. Now, it’s a reality.”
Paul laughed.
“Oh come on, I know I’m not Annie, but I can’t be that bad, can I? And to answer your question, I think we are just two guys hopelessly in love, and trying to protect the loves of our lives.”
Henry nodded in the dark, trying to lighten the solemn mood that had seemed to descend over the room.
“Wow, Paul, when did you become so mushy?”作者: bonniecwt 时间: 2006-2-13 01:30 AM
The Next Morning
8.02am
“Good morning!”
Jackie called when she saw Paul coming out from Annie’s room, still dressed in his pajamas.
“Good morning, what time did you get up anyway?”
He asked in return, when he saw the spread of breakfast on the table.
“Just half an hour earlier than you.”
“You don’t have to prepare breakfast, we can just go out and grab a bite, you know.”
Paul said, wrapping his arms around Jackie from behind.
“I always prepare breakfast for Annie anyway, it’s nothing. I just had to prepare more than usual. Go and wash up, breakfast will be ready when you are done.”
Jackie turned her head back to give her fiancé a kiss on the lips.
Paul nodded, returning the kiss before walking off.
“Hey Paul, good morning!”
Annie greeted when she came out of the bathroom dressed for work, passing by him.
“Morning!”
“Henry’s still in bed?”
“Yep! You know how he is.”
Annie nodded, a mischievous look entering her eyes.
“I will go wake him up.”
Quietly, she entered her own room, carrying a glass of water along with her.
“Wake up, lazy pig!”
She yelled, just before pouring the glass of water on his head.
“What the....?”
Henry sat up, sputtering, trying to orient himself, when he caught sight of Annie, bent over with laughter, an empty glass in one hand.
“Serves you right for being such a lazy pig.”
Annie gasped, in between laughter.
“Why, you.....” He sat up, preparing to get out of bed. “Don’t think I won’t retaliate!”
Before he had finished that sentence, Annie had already dashed out of the room, foreseeing revenge.
“Did you have fun?”
Paul asked, when he saw a still grinning Annie exit the room.
“Oh yes, it was the best!”
“Wow, Henry, taking a bath so early in the morning?”
Jackie crowed sweetly, when she caught sight of a dripping Henry entering the living room. That earned her a glare which was later transferred to Annie.
“Alright, alright, breakfast is done. Why don’t you go change and come out to eat?”
Annie soothed, bringing a towel to Henry, and rubbing his head.
“That’s better.”
Finally calm, he grabbed the towel and returned to the room.作者: 彩色心 时间: 2006-4-30 06:24 PM

She gave him a hug.
“That’s so sweet of you. I never figure you for that kind of guy.”
Henry returned the hug before speaking.
“What kind of guy?”
“A very sweet guy.”
