Another purpose is to show how Annie love Henry ma. Just see when Paul is worrying Jackie, Annie said that she is regreting why she refused Paul's love at first.
However, this part also have a bad effet. If you have watched HH2, this part directly affect the friendship of Henry and Paul. But I think we can ignore it here.

我觉得paul跟annie只是一次意外，paul当时应该是被annie完全不同于自己的生活方式和个性所吸引，想尝试做一些改变。他对annie应该还仅限于好感，既然annie明确拒绝了他，何必死缠烂打呢，作朋友也很好啊。
